REFLECTION ON TRUMAN SHOW

Truman show was released in the year 1998 with a genre or theme of psychological
science fiction and satirical comedy-drama. The film centers on the life of Truman Burbank, a
sales executive in an insurance company, who is happily married. He was just living an ordinary
life and isn’t truly aware of the place he is living and the people he interacts with. He was so
oblivious that his entire life was broadcast on live television and his whole life inside the Sea
Haven are all fake and artificial as well as the people with whom he interacts with are just actors.
Just like Truman, when I was first watching the film, I didn’t find anything suspicious
around the place or people especially in Truman since he was a very genuine person. It was
funny and dramatic, but along the way especially on the scene where they changed the setup of
the place, I fell for that. I didn’t know that the whole place in the film was just a shooting place
for a television show. There are a lot of plot twists that I encountered, it was a roller coaster and
nerve-wracking. So, after watching the film, the first thing that comes into my mind is how
people affect how we think or know ourselves. Like Truman, he was deceived, the people on the
set made him believe that he was living in the real place wherein he isn’t. After he knew the
truth, he doubted himself, his capabilities, and the people whom he trusts, he felt like he doesn’t
know himself. This also reflects on our topic between the real self and the ideal self. Truman
lives in the ideal world but he was real. Just like what Christof said, “You’re the star. You were
real. That’s what made you so good to watch.” Even if people deceived him, he was being real to
himself. Moreover, another lesson from the Truman show that I got is don’t be afraid to face the
world, to face your fears. Truman even if he isn’t aware of what kind of world he is in, still faced
his fears which is the water just to see the real world. This means that don’t be afraid to face your
fears so you could see the rainbow after the rain that is waiting for you.
In conclusion, Truman show was a great film with a lot of moral lessons that brings. It
does not only center on one, but it is much broad than you can imagine. I hope people would
watch this film so they could realize a lot of things about life and ourselves.
