Day: Wednesday and Thursday Date: 9/13/2023 and 9/14/2023


Subject: What Strategies Did Native Nations Use to Protect Their Sovereignty During the
American Revolutionary War?

Analyze the connection between events, locations, and individuals in Massachusetts in the early
1770s and the beginning of the American Revolution, using sources such as historical maps,
paintings, and texts of the period

the roles of Native Peoples and African Americans in the American Revolution, some
serving as Loyalists, some as Patriots

Objective(s): At the end of this lesson my students will be able to gather evidence from primary
and secondary sources to identify the strategies Native Americans used during the American
Revolution.

Resources/Materials List:
● Slideshow Presentation
● Student Handouts
● Highlighter for each student
● Pencil for all students
● Projector or board to present slideshow
● Computer/iPad if needed

Duration: 45-60 minutes each day

Procedure:
Day 1:
1. Have students put away everything on their desk and gather in the center of the room
2. Tell students that today we will be determining what strategies the Native Nations used
to protect their sovereignty during the American Revolutionary War
3. Start presentation slides
4. Progress through slides
5. On Slide 4 remind students of different strategy options: ally, neutral, strategy
a. Discuss what each entails or looks like
6. Progress through slides
7. On Slide 6 stop to discuss what each vocabulary word may look like
a. Progress through slides and discuss each definition
8. Progress through slides
9. On Slide 12 call on students to name the nations on the map
10. Progress through slides
11. On Slide 14 discuss what the strategies on the slide mean

13. On Slide 16 stop to have students turn and talk about why primary sources are a good
way to understand the past

to protect their sovereignty during the American Revolutionary War
3. Review what we worked on yesterday including highlighting evidence to determine
which strategy the Native Nations were using
4. Begin on Slide 42

Native nations use to protect their sovereignty during the American Revolutionary War?”
using evidence from the two day lesson

b. Encourage students to go beyond identifying strategies. Prompt them to provide
evidence and explanations using information from the sources and activities.

Accommodation:
● Work one-on-one with another adult
● Providing the worksheet with larger visuals and/or print
● Instructions should be verbally stated and written out
● Information can be already highlighted to help student identify the strategy
● Help students formulate an answer to the mystery question by providing the sentence
starter “Native nations used ___________ strategies to protect their sovereignty. I know
this because _________.”

Modification:
● Students may focus on one or two Native Nations instead of all 4

Assessment: I will know my students have reached the objective when they are able to use
evidence collected from the lesson to identify strategies Native Nations used during the
American Revolution to protect their sovereignty.

What’s next? Next, students will write a persuasive piece on which strategy they would use
with details from the evidence collected during the lessons.
