For the series’ fifth season, | was presented with a new kind of challenge. For the first time, the geography and century would remain consistent with the previous season. As a result, there was no longer a need to introduce new instruments and styles. Inspired by the drama, it was time to dig deeper into the music that had already been established. The fourth season emphasized exploration and settling, laying down the timbers in the woods to form a home. The fifth builds on this foundation, focusing on the formation of larger communities. Inspired by this, a full choir was featured on the series’ iconic Main Title. This expansion, from one voice in Seasons 1 through 3, to four voice bluegrass vocal harmonies in Season 4, and finally to a full choir in Season 5, reflects the larger story about forming civilization. This concept also allowed me to discover a new musical sound within the palette established in prior seasons. | have featured vocals in the Main Title and throughout significant scenes ever since the first episode, but never an ensemble this large. The introduction of the choir allows the audience to feel something new without actually introducing any new sounds, instruments, or styles. Like the drama itself, the music for Outlander Season 5 has stopped expanding outward into new territories, and instead planted roots. Though the score does not introduce any new sound this season, | feel it is compositionally stronger and more emotional than anything I've written before it. With four seasons of character themes, and the rich musical textures of Scotland and America as my foundation, | have had a rewarding experience writing music for this gripping new season. | sincerely hope that fans will find in listening to this music the same joy | found in writing it.
