EFFECTIVENESS OF STRATEGIC REWARD SYSTEM IN DECREASINGPERCENTAGE OF
STUDENTS’ ABSENTEEISM IN BAYUGAN NATIONAL COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL

S.Y. 2016- 2017

I. Situation

Poblacion is one of the barangays in the city of Bayugan,

Agusan del Sur where Bayugan National Comprehensive High School

is located. The researchers noticed that most of the students

were late in coming to school and the worst is the high rate of

students’ absenteeism and they skip classes whenever they want

to.

Absenteeism is a habitual or intentional failure to attend

school (Loren Murcia, 2015). Every student may miss some school

activities now and then, and absence becomes a problem when the

student is away from school for many days.

It is also one of the most annoying parts for teachers. They

spend lots of effort preparing Lesson Logs and Instructional
Materials thinking 100% of students will meet the objectives.
They spend lots of time formulating recreational activities
thinking every student will enjoy and participate.

Going to school regularly is essential for student’s

education and social skills. There are lots of disadvantages for
those students who constantly or even miss one day in school.
They may be left behind the discussion which results to low
academic performance. These also miss out critical stages of
social interaction and development with their peers which can
result in low self-esteem, social isolation, and dissatisfaction
that could well have precipitated non-attendance in the first
place (Loren Murcia, 2015).

Based on the result of students’ attendance in October 2016,

percentage of absentees in Grade 9 Garnet is 20%, 14.81 % for
Graphite, 34.62 % for Grade 9 Turquoise . These results showed
that teachers need to solve this problem.

In relation to this, students’ absenteeism needs an

intervention if not to eradicate it completely, but to minimize
the problem.

II. Problem

Education is essential to everyone. Students of today are

lucky enough because the government had provided schools that are
accessible. Sad to note, that even how near the distance of
school from students’ home, perfect attendance in Bayugan
National Comprehensive High School is hard to attain. Most of the
absentees allocate their time selling goods for money and stays
at home taking care of their little brother or sister. The lack
of motivation and the location maybe of the school hinder
learners to be active in going to school.

School absenteeism is an alarming problem for

administrators, teachers, parents, society in general, and
students in particular. Unaccepted absences have a negative
effect on peer relationships, which can cause further
absence(Loren Murcia, 2015).The researcher noticed that most
students who keep on missing their classes are inattentive in
class discussion that leads to low academic performance, boredom
and loss of confidence, and worst is the possibility of dropping
out of school early.
Students’ attendance in the previous month, Ocotober 2016,
is alarming. Based on the form 2 given by the section advisers
the percentage of absenteeism is very high. It’s for this reason
that the researchers embarked on developing strategic
intervention that will decrease the percentage of absenteeism of
the students and motivate them to go to school regularly.

I. Generation of Alternative Solution

Reward System is one of the most effective strategies in

motivating students in attending their classes. The purpose of
using of this strategy is to minimize the absenteeism of the
students. This Reward System will help improve the percentage of
daily attendance of the students and may also increase their
motivation in going to school regularly. To solve the existing
problem regarding the absenteeism, the researchers created a
strategic reward system. Certificate and free snacks were given
for the class or section with a very less percentage of
absenteeism of the week.

VI. Plan of Action

a. Objectives
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of
strategic reward system that will help decrease the
percentage of absenteeism in Bayugan National Comprehensive
High School. Specifically, it attempted to answer the
following questions:

1. What is the percentage of absenteeism in a previous

month?
2. What is the percentage of absenteeism after
conducting the reward system technique?
3. Is there a significant difference between the
percentage of absenteeism in a previous month and
after conducting the reward system?

b. Time Frame

This research was conducted last November 7-11,

2016.From 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

c. Target Subjects

The respondent of this study come from the three

sections from grade 9 of Bayugan National Comprehensive
High School. The respondents covered the 160 students
enrolled during the School Year 2016-2017.The whole
population was used by the researchers in gathering the
data.

d. Activities undertaken

After studying the result of the absenteeism of the

student inside the classroom within the month of October
2016, there was a high percentage of absenteeism. The Grade
9 Turquoise has a percentage of 34.62%,20% for Garnet and
Graphite has a percentage of absences of 14.81%.

With the desire of the researchers to decrease the

percentage of students’ absences, the strategic intervention

was used by giving a reward to the whole section that has a

less percentage of absenteeism. The said reward was giving

snacks and a certificate to that section that has less

percentages of absenteeism. The researchers believed that

the reward system will help motivate the students in coming

to school regularly.

e. Evaluation Criteria

In assessing the percentage of absenteeism, the

daily attendance sheet or the form 2 was used. The study

was considered success when there’s a significant

difference or there is a high decrease of percentage of

absences between the percentage of daily attendance in

the month of October and November 7-11,2016.

f. Research Design

The classroom-based action research will be employed

to carry out this study. The three Grade-9 sections of

Bayugan National Comprehensive High School are the

respondents of this research. The aims of the researchers

were to record, analyse and interpret the problem in

absenteeism of the students. This design also

accommodated generalization of findings of the study upon

the target population.

With the permission of the School Principal, Dr. Wilson

C. Calvo, the researchers conducted the study in Bayugan

National Comprehensive High School.

The researchers together with the department head

of TLE Department had identified the three sections in

the school since all of them had not attained perfect

attendance in the previous month. Thus, the researchers

choses one section with the least percentage of

absenteeism to receive the reward.

The attendance of 160 students will be checked daily

by their advisers to monitor the progress of the said

intervention. After a week, the researchers consolidated

the attendance of the three sections and identify the

Best in Attendance Section to receive the reward.

V. Presentation and Interpretation of Results

This chapter discusses the results of the study on the

analysis of students attendance based on the strategic reward
system based on the mean percentage scores (No. of absences).
Statistically, the problems of the study were answered by the
following data gathered by the researchers.

1. Number of respondents in the study:

The table shows that in section Turquoise has the lowest

difference of percentage of absences with 1.39%. Section Garnet
percentage of 2.62% and the Section Graphite has the highest
difference with 4.36%.

The result shows that there is a significant difference

before and after conducting the systematic reward system.

VI. Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

The findings and conclusions based on the results:

Findings:

The study came up the following findings:

1. Based on the percentage of absenteeism on October 2016, the

Grade 9 Graphite is 20%, 14.81 % for Garnet, 34.62 % for Grade 9
Turquoise. This showed there is a need for an intervention to be
implemented.

2. The percentage of absenteeism after conducting the systematic

reward system was decreased. The Grade 9 Turquoise got 33.23% of
absences. It was followed by the section Garnet with a percentage
of 17.33% and the lowest is the Graphite with a total percentage
of 10.45%. This showed that there’s a positive result of the
intervention.

3. The systematic reward system was effective since there is a

big decrease of percentage of absenteeism.

Conclusions

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. The systematic reward system was effective in decreasing

percentage of absenteeism. There was a significant difference
between the percentages of October 2016 and November November 7-
11, 2016

VII. Recommendations

Based on the outcomes of the research, the following are

recommended:

1. Teachers can use systematic reward system to help students be

motivated to go to school.

2. Teachers should formulate various systematic reward system

that are less expensive but effective.

3. A similar study may be conducted covering a large number of

respondents in other school.

4. There must be a variation of reward system from intrinsic to

extrinsic motivation.

5. Lastly, there must be a removal of systematic reward system.

Students must not rely on the short term rewards, but must give
importance to long term effects of education in their lives.

VIII. Reflection
The role of a teacher does not end in teaching; to teach is to
touch lives. Sometimes they keep on complaining why students of today
are different from the past, the fact is there is change. Teachers
should be creative enough to motivate each student; they should create
various strategies to lessen the problems, especially in absenteeism.
The strategic reward system is only one of the ways in motivating
students to go to school regularly. This intervention is a great help
in decreasing students absenteeism.

Using extrinsic motivation like the systematic reward system is

good, but the students must not rely to this. They must know the
importance of attending the class regularly and understand the worth
of attending the class. Intrinsic motivation must be inculcated and
developed by the learners/students so that they are motivated in
attending the class regularly. Knowing the purpose or reason of
performing this thing is one way of motivating themselves not to
escape or absent the class.
