Components of ecosystem
Ecosystem– An ecosystem is a natural unit consisting of all plants, animals and micro-
organisms (biotic factors) in an area functioning together with all of the non-living physical
(abiotic) factors of the environment.
Components of ecosystem
6
Operation of ecosystem
Reception of radiant energy of Sun.
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Stored energy is released in the reverse reaction
Released energy is available to drive other reactions, e.g. cell metabolism and growth

Stability and biodiversity of ecosystem
Little Diverse Ecosystem: Disappearance of group of organisms from food web severely
disrupt the ecosystem.
Examples- Lake & River ecosystems are stable but due to pollution and lower DO level
only lower species can survive.

Alteration of ecosystem and Ecosystem restoration
Human well being: minimum material for
How the balance of Ecosystem is altered ? a good life, positive social relations,
security, freedom, choice
Society & Indirect Drivers of Change: demographic,
Human Well being economic, sociopolitical, science &
Indirect technology, cultural and religious
Drivers Direct drivers of Change: Land use change,
Of Change species introduction & removal, external
inputs, harvesting, natural and biological
events, climate change
Ecosystem Direct Ecosystem services: provisioning ( food ,
services Drivers water), regulating( climate, water,
Of Change diseases), enhancing culture( spiritual,
aesthetic), supporting(primary
production, soil formation)
Alteration of ecosystem and Ecosystem restoration contd..
Since many ecosystem services are received for free, we often take them for granted
until the ecosystem is degraded and the services are declining or at risk. Decision-makers
and institutions need to develop creative ways of protecting ecosystem services
Alteration of ecosystem and Ecosystem restoration contd. Ecosystem restoration
Ecosystem restoration means assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded
or destroyed, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact.
• Passive restoration- Destroyed sites recover naturally through ecological succession
• Active restoration by soil rehabilitation and land stabilization for restoration of the soil’s or
water’s original chemical, biological, and physical characteristics.
Some examples are: Addition of lime to improve soil pH, stemming the flow of fertilizers to
artificially enriched soil or water, inoculating soils with beneficial microorganisms, and tilling
to improve aeration and root penetration.
