6.2 Each part of the work (excavation, pipe laying, concreting,

backfilling) shall be carried out by a dedicated group headed by a
Foreman under the over-all supervision of a Site Engineer.

6.3 The Site Engineer shall raise the necessary Request for
Inspection (RFI) for the following items:

 Pipe laying level and alignment

 Air Testing

 Field Density Test (FDT) of each layer of backfill.

6.4 Quality Control Engineers shall look into the quality aspect of the
work and compliance with this Method Statement and Project
Specifications.

6.5 Client approved Independent Testing Laboratory (Gulf Lab) shall

perform fill material suitability test, Proctor Density test and all
scheduled Field Density Tests (FDT).

6.6 Health, Safety and Environmental issues are addressed in

accordance with the approved HSE Plan (Document Submittal

7. WORK PROCEDURE

7.1 Ensure that the materials to be used are the same materials that
had been approved. All pipes shall be free of cracks, blisters,
broken ends and other imperfections. Factory testing of Vitrified
Clay Pipes shall be in accordance with Part 3.2.3 Section 8 of
Qatar Construction Specifications. Manufacturer’s
recommendation regarding handling and storage should be
strictly followed.

7.2 Prior to excavation, the route of the pipeline as shown on the

approved Shop Drawings, shall be surveyed and set out
accurately. Levelled pegs shall be fixed and maintained at each
change of gradient and at all necessary intermediate points. The
centreline and the level to which the excavation is to be carried
out shall be marked with sight pegs.

7.3 Necessary site inspection and coordination with the respective

Utilities Services Department shall be done to ascertain the
location of underground utilities, which maybe affected by the
excavations to be made for the trenches.

7.4 All trenches shall be excavated in accordance with the lines,

dimensions, grades and pipe sizes as shown on the approved
Shop Drawings. Trench width shall be as follows in compliance
with IFC Drawing No. D-508 Rev. 0 (Pipe Bedding & Chamber
Seal Details):

 (D + 450) or 600mm min. 150-450 mm

 (D + 600) 450-1000 mm

 (D + 1000) >1000 mm

Necessary trench support system shall be provided to safeguard

the work and the workmen. Protection for existing utilities, if any,
shall also be provided. Undercutting of trench sides shall not be
permitted. Any over excavation shall be filled with Grade 20 OPC
concrete.

7.5 The bottom of the trench shall be trimmed and compacted prior to
placing the approved granular bedding over the whole width of
the trench. The size of granular bedding material shall be 10mm
aggregates for pipes ≤300mm and 20mm to 5mm graded
aggregates for sizes >300mm. Thickness of granular bedding
shall be in accordance with IFC Drawings.

7.6 All pipes shall be carefully lowered onto its prepared bed by
means of appropriate slings and tackles if necessary depending
on the diameter of the pipe used. A recess shall be left in the
prepared bed to permit the sling to be withdrawn. The pipeline
shall be clean and unobstructed at the time of its installation and
shall be true to the required lines and levels.

7.7 All pipes and fittings shall have flexible mechanical joints. For
pipes up to 150 mm, joints should be push-fit (sleeve type),
while for pipes greater than 150 mm, joints shall be spigot and
socket type complying with the relevant provisions of BS EN295,
provided with Type D elastomeric joint seals complying with the
relevant provisions of BS2494 and shall be obtained from the pipe
manufacturer.

7.8 When work ceases on any pipeline, the unfinished end of the
pipeline shall be covered.

7.9 Pipeline shall be tested after they are jointed and before any pipe
surround filling is commenced. Testing shall be by Air Test and
should be in accordance with Part 7.4.4 Section 20 of QCS.

7.10 Granular fill materials consisting of 10mm aggregates for pipes

≤300mm and 20mm to 5mm graded aggregates for sizes
>300mm shall be used for pipe surround a minimum of 100 mm
above the top of the pipe. The fill shall be free from other
materials, which may cause damage to the pipe. Such granular fill
materials shall be placed in layers not exceeding 150 mm after
compaction.

7.11 Polyethylene sheet shall be laid on top of the pipe surround after
which a 70mm OPC20 concrete pipe protection shall be poured.

7.12 The remainder of the fill, if any, shall be filled using suitable fill
material, compacted on layers not exceeding 250 mm
unconsolidated thickness to 95% modified proctor. Otherwise, the
100mm sand layer shall be laid directly on top of the 70mm
