5. RESPONSIBILITIES ON SITE

5.1 Use and application of non-explosive demolition agent shall be

undertaken by a dedicated group headed by a Foreman under the
over-all supervision of the responsible Site Engineer.

5.2 The Site Engineer shall raise the necessary Request For
Inspection (RFI) for the drilled holes and non-explosive demolition
agent application activity.

5.3 The Site Engineer shall be responsible for the quality aspect of
the work and compliance with this Method Statement and Project
Specifications.

5.4 Health, Safety and Environmental issues shall be addressed in

accordance with the approved HSE Plan (Document Submittal
No. CP 300(a)- DS-BOTH-01 /008) under the supervision of the
Site Engineer.

6. WORK PROCEDURE

6.1 Grade Selection

Appropriate grade of Bristar shall be selected based on the

application temperature as shown on the following table extracted
from Bristar Product Data Sheet:

APPLICATION TEMPERATURE
GRADE
RANGE MAXIMUM
Bristar 100 Hot 45oC
Bristar 150 Mild 25oC
Bristar 200 Cold 15oC
Bristar 300 Cold 5oC
H-Hot 35oC
Bristar 2000* M-Mild 30oC
C-Cold 15oC
* Rapid cracking within 3 hours

6.2 Storage

Although Bristar is packed in anti-moisture plastic bags and

waterproofed cartons, manufacturer recommends its storage in a
dry place.

Bristar shall be placed on pallets and not directly on the floor.

When storing portion of remaining Bristar after use, air shall be

allowed to escape fully out of the bag. The bag shall then be
sealed with tape.

Due to susceptibility of Bristar to moisture, punctured/damaged

bags during delivery and unloading shall be rejected.

6.3 Drilling Holes

The diameter of the holes which preferably ranges between 40 to

50 mm, and the required arrangement and spacing (refer to Table
IV of the attached Bristar Product Data Sheet) shall be carefully
determined in accordance with the planned crack propagation to
simplify the demolition process. Test breaking shall be conducted
if necessary and reference shall be made to the Appendix of the
attached Bristar Product Data Sheet.

Holes shall be drilled vertically but for structures like walls and
columns where it is more practical to drill horizontally, holes shall
be drilled with a slight slope to make the filling process easier and
to avoid air entrapment.

If the wall or slab to be broken doesn’t have a free edge, an

opening 600 mm x 600 mm in size shall be cut to allow for
expansion.

6.4 Mixing

Pour approximately 1.5 litres of clean water into the container.

Recommended temperature of mixing water are as follows:
 Below 30oC for Bristar 100*
 Below 15 Co
for Bristar 150
 Below 10oC for Bristar 200
* Cool water below 15oC must be used when the average atmospheric
temperature is more than 30oC. The cooler the mixing water, the
longer Bristar will remain fluid.

Add one 5kg bag of Bristar Non-explosive Demolition Agent

gradually.

Mix well for approximately 2 to 3 minutes until a lump free

consistency is obtained. When the viscosity of the mixture is too
high, add little water to achieve good fluidity. The amount of
mixing water per 5 kg. of Bristar shall not exceed 1.70 litres.

6.5 Application

Mixed Bristar shall be poured into the holes within 10 minutes of

mixing with water. Mixture which has lost fluidity shall not be
diluted with water as the strength is greatly reduced.

Use a bucket with pour spout, caulking gun or grouting pump in

filling the holes.

Holes shall be filled with the mixed Bristar to its brim.

For horizontal holes, formworks shall be installed sloping away

from the bottom of the hole with its top higher than the top of the
hole. When the hole is full, insert a small plastic pipe 3 to 5 mm in
diameter or wire to assist in removing entrapped air.

Sequence of holes filling shall start from that nearest to the free
end and the farthest last.

Cover the filled holes with plastic cover to avoid dilution of mixed
Bristar from external water sources until cracking starts.

Once cracking initiates, spray the surface of the concrete to be

demolished with water and keep it wet. This will help widen the
width of the cracks and speed up the cracking process.

At least 24 hours after pouring and cracks has fully developed,

continue with the demolition process by manual or mechanical
means whichever suits a particular site situation. It shall be noted
that the lower the temperature the longer it takes for the cracks to
form.

Table III below extracted from the attached Product Data Sheet
shall be used as a guide in the secondary breaking process.

7. SAFETY PROCEDURES

7.1 The Site Engineer shall physically inspect the working area to
confirm that it is cleared of any hazard and/or obstructions that
may hinder safe access or proper execution of the work.

7.2 The Site Engineer shall ensure that all personnel engaged in the
use and application of non-explosive demolition agent and related
activities are wearing the required Personal Protective
Equipments (PPE).

7.3 Health, Safety and Environmental issues shall be addressed in

accordance with the approved HSE Plan (Document Submittal
No. CP 300(a)- DS-BOTH-01 /008).

7.4 Rubber gloves, safety glasses and safety helmets shall always be
worn when mixing Bristar and filling the holes.

7.5 Any portion of the skin that comes into contact with the mixed
Bristar shall be rinsed with water.

7.6 Do not look directly into holes filed with Bristar for at least 8 hours
after pouring due to danger of splattering or blowing out caused
by heat generation when the temperature of the material to be
broken is over 35oC for Bristar 100, 20oC for Bristar 150 and 15 oC
for Bristar 200 or when the hole diameter exceeds 51mm.

7.7 Additional precautions shall be implemented in accordance with

product Material Safety Data Sheets.
