5. PROCEDURE

5.1 Ensure that the materials to be used are the same materials that
had been approved. Manufacturer’s recommendation regarding
handling and storage should be strictly followed.

5.2 The route of the pipeline shall be surveyed and set out accurately,
its trench width and depth set precisely in accordance with IFC
Drawings, which will indicate the limits to which mat foundation
reinforcing bars shall be placed. The trench shall be blocked out
prior to concreting the mat foundation.

5.3 All essential pipeline elevations shall be marked on the sides of

the mat foundation at each change of gradient and at all
necessary intermediate points.

5.4 Before placing the sand bedding, the bottom of the trench shall be
cleaned of all trash and construction debris that may possibly
cause damage to the pipe. It shall be placed at a minimum
thickness of 150mm beneath the pipe.

5.5 Jointing of pipe shall be done beside the trench before lowering
them to the prepared bed. All joints shall be fusion-welded type
(Butt Fusion or Electrofusion) in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendation.

No protective cap, disk or other appliance at the end of a pipe or

fitting shall be removed permanently until the pipe or fitting which
it protects is about to be jointed.

5.6 Cutting of pipe, if work condition so requires, it shall be done in a

workmanlike manner with an approved cutting machine without
damage to the pipe and so as to leave a smooth end at right
angle to the axis of the pipe. Cutting by hacksaw shall not be
permitted and only experienced personnel shall be utilized.

5.7 After jointing a manageable number of pipes, they shall be

carefully lowered onto its prepared bed using suitable lifting
equipment and necessary support system. Care shall be taken
not to drop the pipe during removal of the slings and tackles. The
pipeline shall be clean and unobstructed at the time of its
installation and shall be true to the required lines and levels.

Jointing strings of jointed pipes shall be done in the trench.

5.8 When work ceases on any pipeline, the unfinished end of the
pipeline shall be covered.

5.9 Pipeline shall be pressure tested after they are jointed and before
any pipe surround filling commence. Testing shall be by Air Test
and shall be in accordance with QCS Section 20 Part 7.4.4.

5.10 Sand shall be used for pipe surround and for the first 300mm
above the top of the pipe. It shall be placed in layers not
exceeding 150mm compacted thickness, thoroughly rammed with
suitably shaped rammer working alternately on either side of the
pipe.

5.11 Sand-Cement Stabilized Fill shall be used for the remainder of the
fill, compacted on layers not exceeding 250 mm unconsolidated
thickness to 95% of the maximum dry density. Backfilling and
compaction shall terminate at the bottom of basement slab on
grade.

Sand-Cement Stabilized Fill shall be batched and mixed in

accordance with Method Statement No. CP 300(a)-QCP-001.

Compaction test on fills shall be carried out at the rate of 1 test for
each layer of backfill for every 50 m of pipeline trench.

5.12 Where PVC warning tape is specified, it shall be laid between 100
mm to 300 mm above the pipe.
