1. SCOPE

The scope of this procedure covers the activities involved in laying

Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride (uPVC) Pipes to ensure that the works
and materials conform to the requirements specified in the Contract
(IFC) Drawings, approved Shop Drawings and Project Specifications.

2. FIELD OF APPLICATION

Intended usage of uPVC Pipes is for the surface water drainage system
of the Oval Parking.

5. PROCEDURE

5.1 Ensure that the materials to be used are the same materials that
had been approved. All pipes shall be free of cracks, blisters,
broken ends and other imperfections. uPVC pipes and fittings
shall be capable of withstanding ultraviolet degradation and shall
incorporate a rodent inhibitor. Manufacturer’s recommendation
regarding handling and storage should be strictly followed.

5.2 Prior to excavation, the route of the pipeline shall be surveyed

and set out accurately. Levelled pegs shall be fixed and
maintained at each change of gradient and at all necessary
intermediate points. The centreline and the level to which the
excavation is to be carried out shall be marked with sight pegs.

5.3 All trenches shall be excavated in accordance with the lines,

dimensions and grades as shown on the IFC Drawings.
Necessary trench support system shall be provided to safeguard
the work and the workmen. Undercutting of trench sides shall not
be permitted.

5.4 The bottom of the trench shall be trimmed and compacted prior to
placing the approved granular bedding over the whole width of
the trench. The size of granular bedding material shall be in
accordance with Table 4.1 (QCS Section 20 Part 4) below and
the thickness shall be in compliance with IFC Drawings.

5.5 All pipes shall be carefully lowered onto its prepared bed by
means of appropriate slings and tackles if necessary depending
on the diameter of the pipe used. A recess shall be left in the
prepared bed to permit the sling to be withdrawn. The pipeline
shall be clean and unobstructed at the time of its installation and
shall be true to the required lines and levels. In no case shall
pipes be jointed before being lowered into position.

5.6 All joints shall be spigot and socket type complying with the
relevant provisions of BS 4660 or BS5481 and shall be provided
with Type D elastomeric joint seals to be obtained from the pipe
manufacturer. Solvent cement for jointing shall comply with
BS4346. For pipes and fittings complying with BS4660, solvent
cement may alternatively comply with BS6209. No protective cap,
disk or other appliance at the end of a pipe or fitting shall be
removed permanently until the pipe or fitting which it protects is
about to be jointed.

5.7 Cutting of pipe, if work condition so requires, shall be done in a

workmanlike manner with an approved cutting machine without
damage to the pipe and so as to leave a smooth end at right

angle to the axis of the pipe. Cutting by hacksaw shall not be

permitted and only experienced personnel shall be utilized.

5.8 When work ceases on any pipeline, the unfinished end of the
pipeline shall be covered.

5.9 Pipeline shall be tested after they are jointed and before any pipe
surround filling is commenced. Testing shall be by Air or Water
Test and should be in accordance with Part 7.4.3 and 7.4.4
Section 20 of QCS.

5.10 Select fill materials consisting of 10mm aggregates for pipes

</=300mm and 20mm to 5mm graded aggregates for sizes
>300mm shall be used for pipe surround a minimum of 100 mm
and a maximum of 250mm above the top of the pipe. The fill shall
be free from other materials, which may cause damage to the
pipe. Such select fill materials shall be placed in layers not
exceeding 150 mm after compaction.

5.11 Polyethylene sheet shall be laid on top of the pipe surround after
which a 70mm OPC20 concrete pipe protection shall be poured.

5.12 The remainder of the fill, if any, shall be filled using the same
material for pipe surround, compacted on layers not exceeding
250 mm unconsolidated thickness to 95% modified proctor.
Otherwise, the 100mm sand layer shall be laid directly on top of
the 70mm OPC20 concrete pipe protection followed by the
reinforced concrete slab on grade.

Compaction test on fills shall be carried out at the rate of 1 test for
each layer of backfill for every 50 m of pipeline trench.

5.13 Where PVC warning tape is specified, it shall be laid between 100
mm to 300 mm above the pipe.
