TOPIC Careers and Career choices
AIMS OF LESSON At the end of this lesson the learner should be able to:
• know the concepts relating to the content.
• Recognise the diversity in jobs with regard to the following:
 Economic sectors: primary (raw material), secondary (finished products or goods), and tertiary (infrastructure and
providing services)
 Work settings: workplace environment and conditions; indoors and outdoors (laboratory, mine)
 Activities involved in each job: designing, assembling and growing.
• Have knowledge of the management and preparation of the workplace to reduce the spread of COVID 19.
• Be able to identify the safety issues at the workplace
• Know the importance of observing the following:
 Fumigation, testing and monitoring
 Provision of information on safety procedures
 Constant monitoring for adherence
 The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs)

INTRODUCTION In the previous lesson, we’ve learnt about the socio-economic factors to consider for careers and study choices.
In this lesson we will cover:
• Different aspects that diversity in jobs can bring and how this diversity can play a role in making a career choice.
• Safety practices and management to minimize the spread of COVID-19 amongst employers and employees.
CONCEPTS AND SKILLS • Diversity: different types and shapes

ACTIVITIES AT EACH JOB Different careers have different types of activities. You will need the skills and
competencies required to perform the activities of the job or career you choose.
E.g.: When choosing a job that requires leadership, it will help to have skills such
as integrity, vision, problem solving and planning. For a more practical job, you
will need to have the skills to work with equipment.

CONSOLIDATION • Diversity: When making a career choice, make sure that you are well aware
of the diversity of the economic sectors, where you want to work and what
your working environment is going to be like.
• Next Lesson: In our next lesson, we will focus more on the skills you need for
different careers, as well as the opportunities within the various careers.
