Part of Speech REVIEW


• Noun: a person, place, or thing

• Verb: an action word

• Adjective: a describing word

• Adverb: a word that can modify a verb, an adjective, another


adverb, a phrase, or a clause. An adverb indicates manner,
time, place, cause, or degree and answers questions such as
"how," "when," "where," "how much".

Word Part REVIEW
• Prefix: an affix placed before a word, base, or another prefix to
modify a term's meaning
Ex. pre- preteen

• Suffix: an affix added to the end of a word to change its


meaning
Ex. –ly kindly

• Root or base word: the form of a word to which prefixes and


suffixes are added to create new words

Synonym and Antonym Review

• Synonyms: words that have similar meanings


Ex. pause and halt

• Antonyms: words that have opposing meanings


Ex. complicated and easy

Create/draw Word of the Day organizer outline in your Word
Work composition notebook.
• After reading the Word of the Day slide, fill in the corresponding
information:
1. record the word
2. list any prefix, list any suffix, and identify the root/base word
3. use the word in a complete and correct sentence
4. create an illustration of the word to make it meaningful to
you
5. list two synonyms
6. list two antonyms
7. list any familiar words that look similar in spelling
8. identify where you might see this word-what genre of text
