AS / LIKE

1. AS can be a preposition meaning in the capacity of / in the function of


Ex: He works as a clerk.

2. but it is usually a conjunction of manner and is therefore followed by a


verb form
Ex: When in Rome do as Romans do.

3. It also appears in comparative structures:


Ex: She is as busy as a bee.

4. In the phrase “such as” (un poco más formal) it means like: (un poco
más colloquial)
Ex: There are different ways of travelling such as (=like) walking, flying or
driving.

5. “As” at the beginning of a clause also has the meaning of when or


while.
As she looked out on to the city, she remembered her childhood there.

6. “As” at the beginning of a clause can mean due to the fact that or since.
As the cinema was closed, we decided to go see another film.
