Sets

Set: A well-defined collection of objects.

Elements or members.

Example: The set of all people living in 3 Basil Close, Liverpool.

"belongs to" or "is an element of"

How to define a set?

1) List or enumerate the elements of the set. Roster notation.

2) Set-builder notation. Specify a rule.

"A is the set of all such that..."

"P is a subset of Q."

Every element of P is an element of Q.

"Q is a superset of P."

Equality of sets: Two sets are equal when they have exactly the same

elements.

Null (empty) set has no elements in it.

For any set ,

Universal set: A set which contains everything, depending on the context.

Example: Countries in the European Union.

China

Cardinality of a set: The number of elements in it.
