iv. Specific heat capacity [1]
v. Moment of a force [1]

1.3 Find the heat required to raise the temperature of 15 litres of water from 10 oC to 80
oC, given that specific heat capacity of water is 4 200 j/ kg k. [5]

1.4 The wheels of a car are 0.6 m in diameter. What is the angular velocity of the wheels
when the car is travelling at 100 km/hr? [5]

1.6 It requires a horizontal force of 200 N to drag a body of mass 100 kg. if the mass is
increased by 10 kg, what would be the horizontal force needed to keep the body moving
steadily? [5]

1.7 The velocity of a body of mass 20 kg is increased from 5 m/s to 12 m/s in 12

seconds. Calculate the power required to produce the change in kinetic energy of the
body. [5]

1.8 A simple machine has a velocity ratio of 24. On tests, it is found that an effort of 75 N
will lift a load of 1 100 N while an effort of 120 N will lift a load of 2 000 N. determine
the law of the machine. [5]

SECTION B

QUESTION 2

a. State three (3) laws of friction [3]

b. A force of 650 N parallel to a plane inclined at 30o to the horizontal is sufficient to
pull a body at uniform speed. If the body’s mass is 100 kg, calculate the following:
i. The coefficient of friction between the body and the plane [6]
ii. The force required to prevent it from moving down the plane [6]

QUESTION 3
In an experiment to determine the specific heat capacity of copper, a specimen having a
mass of 0.2 kg was transferred quickly from boiling water at 100 oC to a copper vessel of
mass 0.3 kg, containing 0.25 kg of water at 21 oC. The final temperature reached by the
copper and water was 26 oC. Calculate the value of the specific heat capacity of copper if
the specific heat of water is 4 200 j/ kg k. [15]

uniformly to its operating peed of 2 800 RPM in 10 seconds, when it was dressed. After
dressing, power to the wheel was switched off and the wheel was allowed to come to
rest, the deceleration of the wheel being assumed to be uniform. If the wheel was
running for a total time of 5 minutes and it took 2 minutes for it to come to rest,
