SUMMARY

ARTICLE NAME:
How Personality Relates to Attitudes Toward Diversity and Workplace Diversity Initiatives.
PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH
The purpose of the research is to examine how the big five traits “Openness to Experience
and Agreeableness predicted as General attitudes toward diversity” and why these two
are the key factors or focal points for “diversity initiatives” in the workplace.
INTRODUCTION
This research article is taken from the Personality and social psychology bulletin (PSPB)
which is an official journal of the Society of Personality and social psychology. The research
is conducted in the United States by Sana F. Lall-Trail, Nicholas P. Salter, and Xiaowen Xu.
This research was received on November 10, 2020, whereas the revision was accepted on
October 13, 2021, and first published online on December 21, 2021.
According to the hypothesis of Study 1 and Study 2, the independent variable are five Big
Personality traits particularly openness to experience and agreeableness while the
dependent variables of both Study 1 and 2 are diversity sensitivity, behavioral diversity
support, universal diverse orientation, general diversity attitude and support for specific
workplace diversity initiatives.
MAIN THEME
The main theme of this research is based on how personality traits impact employees’
behavior, attitude, and performance toward the dependent variables mentioned in the previous
heading. To test the hypothesis of both studies 1 and 2 for examining the relationship between
these variables, researchers created a scenario in which a group of employees is taken from a
random organization to collect donations for a diversity-supporting institution. After testing
the hypothesis, the first finding will become visible that is, both the independent variables are
correlated with each other due to having a similar characteristic which is cognitive empathy.
The second finding is about personality traits that are;
Those employees who score high in both openness and agreeableness are more willing to
give monetary donations to the diversity-supporting institution.
These personality traits also have a positive impact on both existing and potential support for
workplace diversity initiatives after controlling relevant demographic variables.
Therefore, both independent variables have a positive relationship or attitude towards a few
dependent variables.
Definition of terms
Openness to experience & Agreeableness: The openness personality trait describes the
pattern of a person’s cognitive style that distinguishes imaginative, creative, intelligently
curious, appreciative of artistic work, and sensitive to beauty whereas those individuals who
possess agreeable personality traits tend to develop and maintain pro-social behaviors as they
are kind, compassionate, empathic, modest and tender-minded. These two personality traits
share some similar characteristics such as sociability, and emotional and intellectual
intelligence but the main difference between them is, individuals having openness traits are
more aware of their feelings i.e. They are people person but also give importance to their
feelings and opinions than individuals having agreeableness personality trait.
Diversity sensitivity:
Behavioral diversity support:
Universal diverse orientation:
General diversity attitude and support for specific workplace diversity initiatives:

METHOD
The direct or positive correlation research method is used to determine the relationship
between independent variables and dependent variables.
A survey method is used and conducted among 200 participants.
The research design is based on a 6-point Likert-type scale for evaluating responses and
SPSS (statistical software for social sciences) is used for quantitative analysis of responses.
RESULT AND CONCLUSION.
Openness and agreeableness have a positive or direct correlation with universal diversity
orientation as both variables are linked with cognitive empathy whereas the openness trait
does not correlate with sensitivity toward diversity. Agreeableness is correlated with pro-
diversity beliefs as this trait has selfless help and devotion to others.
