Basic Functions Sketch the functions listed below; use their graphs to fill in the blanks:
1
lim =
x→∞ x
lim ln x =
x→∞
lim arctan x =
x→∞
In general
ln x P (x)
lim =0 and for a > 1, lim = 0.
x→∞ P (x) x→∞ ax
Colloquially: at infinity logarithms grow slower than powers, and powers grow slower than exponentials.
f (x)
Combinations of Basic Functions: how to quickly compute lim for functions f, g satisfying
x→∞ g(x)
lim f (x) = ∞, lim g(x) = ∞.
x→∞ x→∞
First, identify the fastest growing term within f (x) and factor it (it will be a forced factor, not a common one);
identify the fastest growing term within g and factor it.
Second: Simplify the ratio of the forced factors from step 1 and evaluate its limit using basic function techniques.
Evaluate separately the limit of the remaining factor from f , and form g; they should be finite, non-zero numbers.
Combine your three limits to finish.
8 · 4x + 5x
Example: find lim √ .
x→∞ 3x + x
1
8 · 4x
Step 1: The fastest growing among the exponentials 8 · 4x and 5x is 5x . Write 8 · 4x + 5x = 5x ( + 1).
5x
√
x
√ x x
√ x x
The fastest growing among 3 and x is the exponential 3 . Write 3 + x = 3 (1 + ).
3x
Step 2: write
8·4x
8 · 4x + 5x 5x 5x + 1
lim x
√ = lim x √
x
.
x→∞ 3 + x x→∞ 3
3x + 1
Compute separately the simpler limits:
x
5x 5
lim x = lim =
x→∞ 3 x→∞ 3
x
8 · 4x 4
lim + 1 = 1 + 8 lim =
x→∞ 5x x→∞ 5
and √
x
lim +1=
x→∞ 3x
8 · 4x + 5 x
Conclude lim √ = Answer: ∞.
x→∞ 3x + x
3x4 + 5 ln x − 12
Example: find lim .
x→∞ (x + 4)(6 + x3 + 5x)
Step 1: factor x4 or 3x4 (your choice) out of the numerator (remember that powers grow faster than logs)
ln x 12
3x4 + 5 ln x − 12 = x4 (3 + 5 − 4)
x4 x
Factor x out of (x + 4) and factor x3 out of (6 + x3 + 5x) to get
4 3 5 6 4 5 6
(x + 4)(6 + x3 + 5x) = x(1 + )x (1 + 2 + 3 ) = x4 (1 + )(1 + 2 + 3 ) .
We write
3x4 + 5 ln x − 12 x4 3 + 5 lnx4x − x124
= 6 .
(x + 4)(x3 + 5) x4 (1 + x4 )(1 + x52 + x3 )
Compute separately the limits at infinity of
x4
x4
ln x 12
3+5 4 − 4
x x
and
4 5 6
(1 + )(1 + 2 + 3 ).
Combine them and finish the problem.
(the limits are 1, 3, and 1. Answer: 1(3)/1=3)
