DREGS AND CARBON CONTENT IN GREEN LIQUOR

Dry ashless filtering paper (diameter 150 mm) in oven at 105 ˚C/30 min. Put the platinum crucible
into a muffle furnace 900 ˚C/30 min. Cool them to room temperature at desiccators. Weight the
paper (M1) and crucible (M2) to constant weight.

Take 500 ml green liquor sample to cylinder. Let the sample settle for example overnight. Filter the
sample through filtering paper using pump. Weight the filtrate (M3, g) and measure the volume
(V1, litre). Wash the precipitate with hot distilled water in small portions until the sample is neutral
(test it with pH-paper). Use water about the same volume as original sample (500 ml). Transfer the
filtering paper + sample into the crucible and put it into oven for 2 h at 105 ˚C. Cool to room
temperature at desiccators and weight it (M4).

Burn the sample carefully with low flame of a gas burner or hot plate until paper has burnt. Put it
into muffle furnace for 45 minutes at 900 ˚C. Cool to room temperature at desiccators and weight it
(M5).

Calculate the results

TSS, g (should be over 0,3 g): M4-M1-M2

Ash, g (should be over 0,1 g): M5-M2

Dregs, g/l TSS/ V1

Dregs, g/kg 1000*TSS/ M3

Carbon in dregs, % 100* (TSS-Ash)/TSS
