Electron density is a measure of the likelihood of finding an electron in a given region

 Implying e- spend more time in this region

 Nodes = 0 electron density

Quantum numbers
 Position of electron in an atom
 Specific atomic orbitals represented by quantum numbers
o Principal quantum number n
 Determines electron energy
 N=1 etc (+)
 As n increases, orbital size increases and distance from nucleus
o Angular quantum number L or l or azimuthal
 Determines the shape of the orbital - not every shape orbital can occur at
every enegry level
 L=0, l=1 etc (n-1) not l but/ I think
 S = orbital with l=0 ,n=1
 P = orbital with l=1 , n=2
 D = orbital with l=2 etc n=3
o Magnetic quantum number m
 Orientation of the orbitals
 So px, py, pz (on the three axis)
 if l = 0, ml = 0 ;
 if l = 1, ml = -1, 0, +1;
 if l = 2, ml = -2, -1, 0, +1, +2
 Instead of all 3 quantum numbers - label system used

o Spin quantum number, m

 Spin up or spin down
 m = +1/2 or m= -1/2
 Pauli exclisuion principle: only 2 e- in a single orbital as there are only two
spins
