My neighbour
Uhhh! Hi there! Have I told you about my
neighbour?
She’s a photographer and travels around the
world taking photos of bands at music festivals.
She told me she hasn’t bought a ticket for years.

Japan. I said, ‘You must enjoy seeing all those
bands!’
But she told me she was so busy taking photos
that she wasn’t listening to the performance

I told her I wanted to be a music photographer
one day, too. So she told me to study

Direct speech is exactly what someone said.

When reporting what someone said, we use a pronoun
plus said or told.

Notice how the present tense becomes the past tense.

A monkey buffet
All around the world, people love to come together to
celebrate. Some people have carnivals with amazing
floats. Some have festivals with fireworks or lantern
celebrations. And some people enjoy going to music
performances to watch famous bands. But did you know
that even animals like to celebrate? Like monkeys!
Every year, on the last Sunday in November, the town of
Lopburi in Thailand is the venue for the amazing Monkey
Buffet Festival. This unusual festival began in 1989.
Business at the local hotel had been very good, so the hotel
manager decided to organise a buffet for the long-tailed
macaques that live in the region. He said that he wanted to
thank them for attracting crowds of tourists to the city.
Monkeys play an important role in Thai culture. They’re
everywhere, climbing up buildings and hanging out on
the street. A naughty student at school in Thailand is
often called a ‘ling’, which is the Thai word for ‘monkey’.
They can sometimes be very annoying. But they can
also be friendly.
At a past festival, the monkeys ate 4,000 kg of rice, fruit,
nuts and sweets that had been put on tables for them
with monkey decorations. Because many tourists had
never been to this festival before, they were surprised
when the monkeys started to climb on them. Later they
said they hadn’t been scared and had really enjoyed the
festival. A few tourists said they were amazed that the
food was for the monkeys.
But with decorated stalls selling food and drink, the
people could enjoy the party too. The programme
also included other events, such as dance and music
performances. Some band members had even dressed
up in colourful monkey costumes. But most people said
that the monkeys were the real attraction.
They accept these mischievous monkeys as part of their
society and show respect with this fun celebration.
