The world is experiencing a profound demographic shift, characterized by a rapidly aging population. This phenomenon, often referred to as an
aging society, presents unique challenges and implications for individuals, communities, and governments. One of the key challenges posed by an
aging society is the strain it puts on healthcare systems. As people age, they tend to require more medical care, including specialized services for age-
related illnesses and conditions. This increased demand for healthcare services can lead to resource shortages, longer waiting time, and escalating
healthcare costs.

Another significant implication of an aging society is the strain on social welfare systems. With a larger proportion of the population entering
retirement age, there is an increased demand for pension benefits, social security, and elder care services. The sustainability of these systems becomes a
pressing concern, as the shrinking working-age population may need help to support the growing number of retirees. Additionally, an aging society
brings about changes in family dynamics and caregiving responsibilities. As older adults may require assistance with daily activities and healthcare
management, the burden often falls on family members, predominantly women, who may have to juggle work, personal life, and caregiving duties.
This can lead to increased stress and financial strain on families, as well as potential conflicts and reduced quality of life for both caregivers and the
elderly.

Furthermore, an aging society can have economic repercussions. The labor force may experience a decline in productivity and potential labor
shortages as a result of a shrinking working-age population. This can hamper economic growth, increase dependency ratios, and put pressure on social
security systems. Governments and businesses need to adapt by implementing strategies to support older workers, promote workforce participation,
and address skills gaps. Despite the challenges, an aging society also presents opportunities. Older adults have a wealth of knowledge, skills, and
experience that can contribute to society in various ways. They can engage in volunteer work, mentor younger generations, and participate in lifelong
learning programs. Creating age-friendly environments and promoting active aging can harness the potential of older adults, fostering social integration
and intergenerational cohesion.

38. What is one of the key challenges posed by an aging society?

(A) Decline in intergenerational cohesion (B) Increased demand for childcare services

(C) Strain on healthcare systems (D) Decreased dependency ratios

39. What is a significant implication of an aging society?

(A) Reduced burden on social welfare systems (B) Decreased need for specialized medical care

(C) Higher employment rates among older adults (D) Increased demand for pension benefits and elder care services

40. Who typically shoulders the burden of caregiving in an aging society?

(A) Retirees with ample free time (B) Government-supported healthcare providers

(C) Younger family members, primarily women (D) Professional caregivers hired by elderly individuals

41. What economic impact can an aging society have?

(A) Increased productivity and labor force expansion (B) Decreased dependency on social security systems

(C) Potential labor shortages and reduced economic growth (D) Greater availability of skilled workers in the market

42. What opportunities does an aging society present?

(A) Increased demand for age-related healthcare services (B) Enhanced intergenerational conflicts

(C) Utilization of older adults' skills and experience (D) Decreased social integration and cohesion

Taiwan is globally recognized for its industrial and technological success. However, Taiwan also deserves to be recognized for its ecological and
geological wonders. From tropical forests to rocky alpine meadows, sea turtles to coral reefs, Taiwan is truly a natural paradise. Hualien County on
Taiwan’s east coast is the best place to visit to see such natural ecosystems. Hualien has escaped the industrialization and urbanization that have taken
over much of the country and is one of the last places in Taiwan that remains truly natural and wild. Hualien is a place of biodiverse wetlands, scenic
waterfalls, clear mountain streams, wild forests, and rugged mountains. With this natural diversity, combined with clean air and beautiful scenery,
Hualien is a paradise within a paradise.

Without a doubt, the most impressive part of Hualien County is Taroko Gorge. Taroko Gorge is a 19-kilometer-long valley within Taroko National
Park. Although the gorge has incredible biodiversity, with hundreds of bird, lizard, insect, crab and mammal species, as well as more than 2,000 plant
species, this biological wealth is not what makes Taroko Gorge so special. What makes it special is the immense size of the gorge itself. The narrow
and sinuous gorge has 300-meter-tall walls that are so steep, and they seem impossible to believe when you see them. Nowhere else in Taiwan has such
a dramatic geological landscape.

The reason Taroko Gorge exists in Hualien is because of geology. Taiwan was formed by the collision of two tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean.
The collision of these plates created undersea mountains. Over millions of years these mountains grew taller, eventually emerging from the ocean and
becoming Taiwan. Importantly, the heat and pressure of these colliding plates sometimes create new types of rock. One special type of rock that was
formed is an extremely soft rock called marble. The only place in Taiwan where this soft marble was formed is in the Taroko National Park area.

This soft marble weathers and erodes easily, which allowed the Liwu River, over thousands of years, to dig the gorge deep, but not wide. This
created the narrow and deep gorge we see today. The formation of Taroko Gorge was only possible because during Taiwan’s formation a lucky type of
rock was made and placed in Hualien’s mountains, awaiting the Liwu River to turn it into one of the world’s most impressive geological landscapes.

43. Which statement best summarizes this passage?

(A) The length and depth of Taroko Gorge is the result of the size and power of the Liwu River being able to erode rock faster than other rivers in
Taiwan.

(B) Taroko Gorge is a unique place in Taiwan because it has many plants and animals and is a highlight for tourists visiting Taiwan.

(C) The geography in Hualien made it difficult for industrialization, so Hualien remains pristine and beautiful.

(D) Taroko Gorge is the highlight of Hualien County, and exists because of the presence of a special soft rock that is only found here and is easily
eroded by the Liwu River.

44. What does the author mean by the phrase “biological wealth” in Paragraph 2?

(A) The economic value of resources in Taroko National Park

(B) The ecological diversity of Taroko National Park

(C) The value of Taroko National Park to the tourism industry

(D) The comparative number of plants and animals in Taroko National Park

45. Based on the information in this passage, which processes led to the formation of marble?

(A) Heat and pressure (B) Weathering and erosion

(C) Industrialization and urbanization (D) Plant and animal diversity

There were so many coffins — 19 in all — that they lined an entire wall of the Wat Rat Samakee temple. A long white string, a Buddhist symbol
of purity and protection, ran across their tops. Placed around each coffin were items to carry the young children into the afterlife: a Spiderman outfit, a
plush kitty, juice boxes, grilled pork and toy trucks, many of them.

The town of Uthai Sawan on Saturday started formally mourning their dead, 36 of them. Twenty-three were children in a day care center who died
Thursday when a former police officer shot and stabbed them in a rampage. There was Asia, 3, who loved cycling and was allowed to ride his bike
inside his house. Lying several coffins away was Daen, 4, who loved Matchbox cars.

Uthai Sawan is a rural town of about 6,000 in northeastern Thailand. The funerals had to be split across three temples. Monks from neighboring
provinces traveled to the town to help with the funeral rites. On Saturday morning, the framed photograph of Athibodin Silumtai, whom everyone
called Asia, was still not ready because there was only one photo shop in town, said Khamphong Silumtai, his great-aunt.

“It just feels like this is not his time to go,” said Khamphong, 46. “He is too young and too innocent. He was gone too soon.”

Thailand is a majority-Buddhist country, where the faithful believe that making merits, or doing good deeds, is essential for the deceased to live
well in the afterlife. Funerals are often carried out with that goal in mind.

Phra Winai, who has been ordained for 24 years, said he traveled to Uthai Sawan from nearby Loei province to see if he could help. He said he
has carried out funeral rites for young children who died by drowning or in accidents, but “never anything like this.”

“This is such a tragedy,” Phra Winai said. But, he said, the tenets of Buddhist teaching are that life is a cycle involving birth, aging, suffering and
death.

“Look at nature: When a tree gives fruit, the fruit does not always ripen.” he said. “The young fruit can fall when there’s wind,” he added. “Life is
so unpredictable and uncertain. We can’t do anything with this uncertainty.”

46. What is the best theme of the article?

(A) A Thai town showing tradition about tragedy (B) The comparison of human and nature

(C) A celebration of some festivals in Thailand (D) Thai people’s belief in the unpredictability of life

47. What is Phra Winai’s tone in the article?

(A) indifferent (B) nervous (C) helpless (D) uneasy

48. Which item may NOT be put around the coffins of children’s funeral rites?

(A) food (B) clothes (C) toys (D) utensils

49. What description is true according to the article?

(A) Photos of kids need to be ready for the funeral rites.

(B) A long red string is Buddhist symbol of purity and protection.

(C) Children were shot to death by a crazy hunter.

(D) Monks from neighboring provinces are required to take care of the students in the local schools.

50. What description is NOT true according to the article?

(A) Thai people believe children will have a better afterlife if they have a good funeral.

(B) This is Phra Winai’s first experience in helping with the children’s funeral rites.

(C) Asia’s photo is not ready because there are too many deaths and too few photo shops.

(D) Doing good things, such as helping the dead’s funerals, is important for those who hope to lead a happy afterlife.
