I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT MY HOME-TOWN: HUÉSCAR. SPECIFICALLY, ABOUT ITS MOST

IMPORTANT TRADITION: LADIES ALODIA AND NUNILON ROMERIA

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO HUÉSCAR?

HUÉSCAR is located in Northern Granada. It has over eight thousand inhabitants.

ROMERIA

Moreover, it has plenty of beautiful places to visit. There are also many bank holidays and
celebrations, although the most important one id Ladies Alodia and NunilonRomeria. A
Romeria is a procession held in honour of the patron saints, in our case, Ladies Alodia and
Nunilon.

This romeria is held after 50 days from Holy Weej. It lasts for 5 days. During these days, there
are plenty of activities and celebrations in town. We choose the “King & Queen”, wearing
typical costumes, street parades, processions and trekking to the top of a close mountain.

COSTUMES

Citizens wear typical costumes, so I would like to talk about these clothes. Then you’ll realize
how beautiful they are.

Boys wear black trousers with red tassels on both sides, a black vest, a white shirt with lace in
collar and cuffs. They also wear a red sash around the waist, long white socks made with a
crochet hook and esparto shoes.

Girls wear heavier garments and more pieces. They wear a kind of skirt called “refajo” , which
is first painted and ornamented with flowers which later are embroidered with coloured
threads. Also, a black velvet shirt with lace in collar and cuffs. A white petticoat with red
ribbons. They wear the same long socks that men do. Also, a black apron embroidered, a
flower foulard over the shoulders and white esparto shoes.

Female costumes are really hard work. We start preparing it at Christmas. Every garment is
embroidered by hand with a big taboret and crochet hook. However, if you do not know how
to embroider, you can buy it in a local shop. They sell everything except the shirt, which has to
be made by a dressmaker. For menswear, they sell everything as well except trousers, which
have to be made too.

Best costumes are chosen as “King and Queen”. The rest of people enjoy dancing typical songs
like seguidillas, fandangos or jotas.

Costumes are quite heavy, speacilly women’s. They are warm clothes. Imagine, there are years
in which the celebration is held in June. It is too hot. Wearing those clothes is quite
uncomfortable and stressing due to sweating.
I hope you enjoyed it. I invite you to come to this celebrations next June to honour our saint
patrons Alodia and Nunilon. If you come, you will enjoy a lot!
