BIRTH POSITIONS

Breech- the bottom is the part of the baby’s body
closest to the birth canal.
Breech birth - the baby's bottom is down.
Cephalic- is when the baby is head first.
Compound- is a presentation in which an extremity
presents alongside the part of the fetus closest to the
birth canal.
Crowning- the appearance of the baby’s scalp at the
vaginal opening in childbirth.
Face- position in which the head of the baby is sharply
extended so that the face comes first.
Footling- is where one or both feet are presenting.
Frank breech- is when the baby's legs are folded flat
up against his/her head and his/her bottom is closest
to the birth canal.
Funic-presentation of the umbilical cord in labor.
Oblique- is when the baby is in a diagonal position.
Pelvic- is a breech presentation.
Polar, longitudinal- presentation in which the long axis
of the baby is parallel to the long axis of the mother.
Shoulder- presentation with the fetal shoulder as the
presenting part.
Transverse- is when the baby is lying horizontally in
the uterus.
