Part 1: Preparation of sodium perborate

1. Approximately 5.0 g borax and 1.09 g NaOH (sodium hydroxide) were first
weighed and both were dissolved in cold water in the minimum required
amount.
2. The dissolved mixture was then gradually applied to a 7ml solution of 30
percent H2O2.
3. The solution was then cooled in and dissolved in a spoonful of ice-water.
Stirring continued for 15 minutes until small sodium perborate crystals were
observed to start separating out.
4. The crystals were then filtered gravity while washing with cold water and
then a small amount of ethanol.
5. The crystals were left to dry in air. Before it stopped, the salt was stable but
it gradually started to decompose.
6. Then the crystals were weighed, and the yield percentage was determined.
7. Small amounts of crystals (perborate sodium crystals) were dissolved in
water and the following experiments were applied and observations
reported.
8. To check the acidity a drop of the solution was placed on the PH paper.
9. A few drops of that were applied in a test tube to a solution of diluted
H2SO4 and KI.
10. It was tested with a starch-iodide paper.
11. A few drops of this has been applied in a test tube to a solution of diluted
H2SO4 and KMnO4.
12.Also all these test were repeated with H2O2 which was kept as a control
