Introduction:
Bangladesh is a developing country with huge social, economical and environmental problems.
However, this is evident that the increasing practice of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It
is contributing to improving in the lives of its citizens. As defined by the World Business
Council for Sustainable Development, “Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing
commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while
improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local
community and society at large”.

Objective of the study:


The main objective of this study is to identify the nature and the situation of CSR practices in the
different industrial sectors of Bangladesh.

What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)?


CSR is a management concept and business approach in which companies integrate social,
environment, and economic concerns into their values, culture, and decision-making processes. It
involves employing various actions that go beyond the baseline of required laws, regulations,
and trade rules to actively improve local and global communications.
CSR is generally understood as being the way through which a company achieves a balance of
economic, environmental and social imperatives, while at the same time addressing the
expectations of shareholders and stakeholders. It’s called “Triple Bottom Line Approach”.
Now I am describing Triple Bottom Line Approach (TBL) in shortly:
The TBL is a theory that seeks to gauge the level of corporate social responsibility in business.
By balancing people, planet, and profit, it’s possible to build a more sustainable business model
and circular firm.

Examples of Corporate Social Responsibility:
CSR involves a broad range of activities. Industries can implement this management concept into
their ongoing operation in several ways. Some of the most common examples of CSR include:
 Implementing policies that benefit the environment (reducing carbon footprints, using
recyclable materials etc.)
 Making socially and environmentally conscious investments
 Improving labor policies and embracing fair trade
 Participating in charitable endeavors
 Getting involved in volunteer work

Purpose of Corporate Social Responsibility:


The purpose of corporate social responsibility is to give back to the community, take part in
philanthropic causes, and provide positive social values. Businesses are increasingly turning to
CSR to make a difference and build a positive brand around their industries.

In our country, we have different types of industrial sectors which are practicing the Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR). Now I am describing CSR practices in our Bangladesh by different
industrial sectors in shortly.

CSR in Pharmaceutical Industry:


Square Pharmaceuticals Limited is the flagship company of Square Group which is holding the
strong leadership position in the pharmaceutical industry of Bangladesh since 1985 and in now
its way to becoming a high performance player global. Their mission, vision, and objective are
given below that:-
 Mission:
To produce and provide quality & innovative healthcare relief for people,
maintain stringently ethical standard in business operation also ensuring benefit to the
shareholders, stakeholders and the society at large.

 Vision:
They view business as a means to the material and social wellbeing of the
investors, employees and the society at large, leading to accretion of wealth through
financial and moral gains as a part of the human civilization.

 Objective:
To conduct transparent business operation based on market mechanism
within the legal & social framework with aims to attain the mission reflected by their
vision.

Square pharmaceuticals limited scale-up CSR activities to consider the interests of their external
and internal stakeholders like customers, employees, vendors, shareholders, society, government
etc. and ecological & ethical considerations in all aspects of operations. Square is one of the
pioneer signatories of United Nations Global Compact (UMGC) in Bangladesh.

Square is proud to be a Bangladeshi industry actively which involved in various field of


Corporate Social Responsibility. Here they are:
 Commitment towards environment
 Commitment towards employee
 Support to education
 Advancing research and development program
 Women empowerment
 Commitment towards society and support to social grounds
 In disaster management
 Responsibility towards government
 Square Child Development Center a journey started

CSR in Banking Industry:


Agrani Bank Limited (ABL) is the largest government commercial bank in Bangladesh. Now-a-
days, banking industry in Bangladesh is very prospective and competitive. To give a competitive
side, CSR is very strong and helpful element for any bank. In this paper shows that ABL is one
of the most successful banks in Bangladesh and still growing having enough expectations. Other
player in the banking industry should take a part in this field to gain certain competitive lend.
Agrani Bank Limited is much aware in support of environmentally sustainable social
development since its introduction as an essential part of the Corporate Social Responsibility.
The bank is committed to CSR towards the community. Their ethics are clear in other words not
to earn excessive profits. Their vision is to build up a society where human dignity and human
rights receive the highest consideration and evaluation. Their law is also to improve the society
and its culture by means of CSR. Its activities are related to the needs of our valued customers,
shareholders, the employees, and communities.
The environment friendly banking in other words green banking is a new concept in our country.
It is an innovation of Bangladesh Bank. However, from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),
Agrani Bank Limited has introduced environment friendly in house and out house green banking.
The bank has already introduced a credit line for green financing to the sectors.

Green Banking Finance:
 Term loan
 Funding for environment oriented technologies, projects, industries, or business such as:
Solar home system, Mini grid, Bio gas plant, Hydro power plant, PET
(Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottle reprocessing plant, LED bulb production,
Solar battery reprocessing plant, Effluent treatment plant etc
 Monthly/Quarterly/Yearly equal/Unequal installments
 Interest rate 9% (changeable)
 Easy loan processing

CSR in Seafood Industry:


Corporate Social Responsibility in the seafood industry is on the rise. Because of increasing
public awareness and non-government organization (NGO) campaigns, seafood buyers have
made various commitments to improve the sustainability of their wild seafood sourcing. As part
of this try, seafood suppliers have developed their own CSR programs.
In our country, we have some exporting seafood industries like ARK Seafood limited, Achia sea
foods limited, BD Seafood limited, Marine Fresh BD, Acqua International, Khulna Frozen Foods
Export Ltd. (KFFE), A.K.Khan & Co. Ltd., Bengal Fisheries Ltd., Aman Sea Food Industries
Ltd., Noakhali Gold Foods Ltd., Seacon Bangladesh etc.
From among them, BD Seafood Limited is a world-class processor and exporter of ethically
sourced farmed raised black tiger and freshwater shrimps strategically located in Bangladesh.
Their sustainable and eco-friendly methods with state-of-the-art technology meet and exceed
international standards of food safety regulations including ISO 22000, HACCP, GMP, and
BRC.
Bangladesh a country blessed with exquisite natural beauty and boundless energy. The country is
endowed with phenomenal geographical characteristics for the seafood industry with a coastline
of 580 kilometers and moderate salinity of adjacent water bodies. It is the perfect environment
for farming of black tiger and freshwater shrimps.
BD seafood limited is the largest seafood processing plant in Bangladesh approved by US FDA
and European Union. BD seafood factory is located in Chottogram near the banks of Karnaphuli
River within very close proximity of the country’s largest seaport and the core shrimp cultivating
zone of chottogram Bangladesh.
BD seafood is committed to make positive contributions to the society with the aim of increasing
the prosperity and wellbeing of all. This industry’s CSR initiatives:

 Responsible, ethical, and environment friendly seafood souring is of foremost importance
to them and they systematically ensure fair prices for the shrimp farmers.
 They are continuously innovated their aquaculture techniques to achieve the highest
industry standards.
 BD seafood engages with all stakeholders to continuously improve the living standards of
fishermen and encouraging environment friendly harvesting techniques.
 They have world-class healthy working conditions and day-care facilities for the children
of working mothers with zero tolerate policy towards child labor.
 It also offers emergency medical treatment with 24-hours doctors (both male and female)
on-site along with free medicine.
 80% of their employees are women; they continuously strive for the welfare and benefits
of females and under privileged sectors of the society through effective employment
generation.
Upcoming and Long-term initiatives of this industry:
 Protection of Marine Life Diversity, Green Movement for the Sustainability of
Ecosystems.
 Protection of water bodies like canals and other island aquatic reservoirs of
Bangladesh.
 Long-term beneficial schemes for the families of farmers and fishermen.

CSR in Jute Industry:


When many people were doubt the future of jute, Gemcon saw an opportunity in a world
increasing demanding bio-friendly packing materials. Since 2003, Gem Jute has been exploring
ways to make jute even much friendly. It is a business of Gemcon group which was founded by
Kazi Shahid Ahmed. They produce export quality goods. Their products are jute bag, jute yarn,
jute cloth, Geo textile, handicrafts etc.
Gem Jute’s mission is to supply quality jute products to markets across the world, while
providing employment in the local areas. Its vision is to produce customer centric and
environmentally friendly products through our passion and innovations. Its main objectives are
to serve the local people by creating job opportunities, defend the environment, protect
traditional agro-industries and earn foreign currency for the country through a profit-making
venture.
Gem jute is always trying for a harmonious and smooth relationship with local environments and
communities. The company employs under a corporate umbrella which provides meaningful
facilities and welfare to all. The product, jute itself, is an environmentally friendly product.
Moreover, Gem jute is always keen to control any environmental impairment with respect to
social front, natural facets, health and safety by practicing world-class technology in our plant.
Gem jute plays a significant role in the local community development. The company is also
involved in different socially responsible activities like distributing aids and cloths among poor
people during the time of natural disaster and in winter season. Some of the tasks being
accomplished by Gem jute are granting scholarships to impoverished students who excel, giving

proper donations to orphan children, financially supporting local religious and educational
foundations, distributing medical financial assistance to needy patients and arranging medical
health camps etc.

CSR in Ceramic Industry:


In our country, people use different types of tiles and ceramics to decorate their houses, gardens,
and office premises, and to add an extra layer of beauty to the buildings. Tiles and Ceramics
Companies are silently booming in Bangladesh and there are a number of tiles and ceramics
companies. Under a trade part named Bangladesh Ceramic, Manufacture & Export Association
(BCMEA); Bangladesh has international standard export-oriented companies of tiles and
ceramics too. The tiles and Ceramics of these companies are really good. All of these companies
are showing their abilities to beat the competitive market. There are given below some
companies’ name:
DBL Ceramics Limited, Paragon Ceramic Industries Limited, MIR Ceramic Ltd, China-Bangla
Ceramic Industries Ltd, Akij Ceramics Limited etc.
From among them, Paragon Ceramic Industries Limited (PCIL) is renowned industry in our
country. PCIL was registered on 12 June 2008 in Bangladesh. PCIL factory is located in
Mirzapur, Gazipur Area, about 50 km from the Capital Dhaka City where all the infrastructural
facilities are available.
Paragon Ceramic Industries Limited believes in “Business integrated with Environmental and
Social responsibilities” without which, business is neither ethical nor legal. That is why PCIL has
invested a lot to keep the working environment safe and secure. PCIL is committed to operating
its business in a manner that is both sensitive and responsible. It is also committed to supporting
the Government’s vision for Corporate Social Responsibility. Specifically, promoting business

activity that brings simultaneous economic, social and environmental benefits; ensuring the best
minimum levels of performance in areas such as health & safety, the environment and equal
opportunities. Moreover, PCIL is committed to operating in a socially responsible manner,
supporting a number of local communities and social or charitable causes as well as running its
operation in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Conclusion:
The concept of CSR is used as shorthand for businesses’ contribution to sustainable
development. They include labor standards, human rights, education, health, child labor, poverty
reduction, conflict, and environmental impacts. That is why every industry should maintain the
CSR activities for our country, society, and environment.
