Types of Man Made Disasters

1. Oil Spill

-An oil spill is the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially
marine areas, due to human activity. These tend to happen when pipelines break, big oil tanker ships
sink, or drilling operations go wrong. To prevent oil spills, use clean vessels for oil transportation and
storage, implement proper maintenance and inspection procedures for vessels as well as all loading and
unloading equipment, and use double-hulled vessels or other vessels with enhanced oil spill prevention
systems.

2. Deforestation

- Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land. Direct causes of deforestation are agricultural
expansion, wood extraction (e.g., logging or wood harvest for domestic fuel or charcoal), and
infrastructure expansion such as road building and urbanization. To prevent deforestation, engage in
tree-planting initiatives in your community or through global organizations, recycle and buy recycled
products, and avoid palm oil.
Types of Natural Disasters

1. Earthquake

- An earthquake is a weak to violent shaking of the ground produced by the sudden movement
of rock materials below the earth's surface. An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. We
cannot prevent natural earthquakes from occurring but we can significantly mitigate their effects by
identifying hazards, building safer structures, and providing education on earthquake safety.

2. Flood

- An overflow of water onto normally dry land. The inundation of a normally dry area caused by rising
water in an existing waterway, such as a river, stream, or drainage ditch. Flooding typically occurs when
prolonged rain falls over several days, when intense rain falls over a short period of time, or when an ice
or debris jam causes a river or stream to overflow onto the surrounding area. Flooding can also result
from the failure of a water control structure, such as a levee or dam.
