Student Information Forms, Walking Forms, and Medically at Risk Packages

This is just a reminder to please return the Student Information forms that have been sent
home. Please return this to school as soon as possible. There will also be a BLUE
Neighborhood Walk form coming home for you to sign to allow your child to go on
neighbourhood walks. Please return these forms as soon as possible.

If your child has a medical condition you will receive a package for you to review. Please take
the time to review these carefully and sign the plan and consultation record and return it to
school.

Allergies and Medically-at-risk Students

Romeo Public School is a nut free and fragrant free school. Please ensure that lunches and
snacks are nut free. Please remind students that they are not allowed to share food. If any
child requires additional food we have a snack program. Note: We are also a scent free
facility.

Important Allergy Note in KG

We have a JK student who is severely allergic to tomatoes and peppers. Any products
containing tomatoes, including tomato sauce, ketchup, etc. could cause a severe allergic
reaction resulting in life threatening complications. As a result, we are asking that our
KG classrooms be tomato and pepper free. We understand that this is an inconvenience
when planning and packing lunches; however, this small inconvenience ensures that a child can
play safely in our kindergarten classrooms. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Some that contain tomatoes: Ketchup, Ketchup chips, pizza (sauce), lunchables with ketchup or
tomato sauce, many bbq sauces, and vegetable juices.

Sabrina’s Law and Anaphylaxis

In January 2006, Sabrina’s Law came into effect. This Law requires school boards to have
emergency procedures in place to deal with incidents of anaphylaxis and to provide training for
all staff. With support from the Huron Perth Public Health Unit, school principals provide to their
staff, annual training in the administration of EPI-Pens to treat anaphylactic reactions.

In cases where a student is anaphylactic, parents/guardians are expected to provide an

EPI-Pen(s) for their child to be kept at the school. Parents/Guardians must also work with the
school to develop an Individual Medical Management Plan that outlines emergency procedures
for their child.
In accordance with Sabrina’s Law, all schools have been provided with two generic EPI-Pens.
These EPI-Pens are being provided to support schools in responding to a medical emergency
for an anaphylactic student for whom the school has an Individual Medical Management Plan
and Emergency Procedure in place. Also, in accordance with Sabrina’s Law, schools must
administer an EPI-Pen when a student is suspected of suffering an anaphylactic reaction even if
no Individual Medical Management Plan exists. If you are aware that your child is allergic to
epinephrine or if you have any concerns, it is suggested that you contact the school principal.

Ryan’s Law and Asthma

As you may be aware, Ryan's Law was passed by the Ontario Legislature in 2015. This piece of
legislation is an important step to support the well-being of students with asthma in Ontario
schools. If your child has asthma, we ask that you immediately contact the main office at your
school to provide information about your child’s asthma medication. With your permission, your
child will be allowed to carry his/her asthma medication while at school.

The Ministry of Education website has resources on asthma that can be found at:
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/healthyschools/anaphylaxis.html

As a best practice and to support your child, please let the school know if your child has a
medical condition so that the school is aware and can keep this information on file. If you have
any questions do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Orange Shirt Day - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On Friday, September 29 students are encouraged to wear orange in honour of National Day for
Truth and Reconciliation, on September 30.

Students Biking, Walking, Scootering

We encourage students to walk, bike or scooter to school, if possible. Physical activity is good
for the heart and mind, and a great way to start and end the day! It also reduces traffic in front of
the school and it’s good for our environment.

Avon Maitland District School Board Policies and School Forms

The following AMDSB policies and procedures and many school forms can be found on the
Romeo Public School Website

for staff and students across the system. Please know that if you or your child are in crisis, or

Crisis Response Team 1-888-829-7484 or Kids Help Phone 1-800-668-6868 or TEXT 686868.

School Messenger - Communication by Email

We will be sending the majority of our communication, newsletters and notices, to our families
through email. Please check the emergency form that will be coming home with your child to
make sure your email address is correct. Sending newsletters and notices to you through email
is quick and easy, saves a lot of paper, and you won’t have to search through backpacks! If you
require a paper copy please contact the office.

Lost and Found – LABEL, LABEL, LABEL

Please be sure to clearly mark your child(ren)’s name on their clothing, hats, shoes, etc. that are
brought to school. If the articles are labelled with the student’s name they can easily be
returned. Your cooperation is essential.

Volunteers
We are seeking volunteers for the following two programs:
● Breakfast Program - This program starts on September 18th. Many students use our
breakfast program. Volunteers arrive at 7:30 am to prepare the food and students arrive
at 8:00. The program finishes at 8:30 am.
● Reading Program - As a reading volunteer you read with students in the hallway to
support their reading. Usually volunteers come weekly and are connected to one
classroom.
Our volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application and will receive a
program/school orientation. You are also required to complete a police record check
with vulnerable sector check through the Stratford Police. The cost of $25 will be
reimbursed upon submission of receipt. Volunteers have a tremendous impact on our
school community. Thank you for all that you do for our students.
