An electric dipole is defined as

a couple of opposite charges
+q and –q separated by a
distance d. The dipole moment
is given by

Rules for Drawing Electric

Field Lines

● The field line begins at the

positive charge and ends
either at negative the
charge or at infinity.

● When the field is stronger,

the field lines are closer to
each other.

depends on the charge.

crossover.

Electric flux through the surface 1,2,3 Marks

Electric flux

Electric flux is the rate of

flow of the electric field
through a given area & is
proportional to the number
of electric field lines going
through a virtual surface.
Electric flux through the surface 1,3,5 Marks

The flux of the electric field

out of a closed surface is
proportional to the electric
charge enclosed by the
surface, irrespective of how
that charge is distributed.

(a) Find the expression for the electric field
(E) due to a straight uniformly charged
infinite line of charge density λ C/m
(b) Draw a graph to show the variation of E
with perpendicular distance r from the line
of charge.

5 Marks (2018)
(a) Consider a cylindrical Gaussian surface
of radius r and length I coaxial with line
charge. The cylindrical Gaussian surface
may be divided into three parts

i. curved surface S1
ii. flat surface S2 and
iii. flat surface S3.

By symmetry, the electric field has the

same magnitude E at each point of
curved surface and is directed radially
outward. We consider small elements of
surfaces S1, S2 and S3.
b) Graph showing variation of E
with perpendicular distance from
line of charge : The electric field
is inversely proportional to
distance V from line of charge.
Define electric dipole moment. Is it a
scalar or a vector ? Derive the
expression for the electric field of a
dipole at a point on the equatorial plane
of the dipole.

5 Marks (2013)
Electric dipole moment : Electric dipole
moment is defined as the product of magnitude
of either charges and the distance between the
positive and negative charge of the electric
dipole. The strength of any electric dipole is
measured by the magnitude of its electric
dipole moment.

Electric dipole moment, p = q x 2a

It is a vector quantity.
In vector form it is written as

Where the direction of a is from negative

charge to positive charge.

Electric Field of dipole at points on the

equatorial plane:

Let P be the point on the equatorial plane

of the dipole where electric field is to be
calculated. Let its distance from either
charge be r. The magnitude of the
electric field due to the two charges +q

Use Gauss’s theorem to find the
electric field due to a uniformly
charged infinitely large plane thin
sheet with surface charge density

3 Marks (2016,2017)
Let electric charge be uniformly distributed over the
surface of a thin non-conducting infinite sheet. Let the
surface charge density be σ.
According to Gauss theorem:
Two large charged plane sheets of charge densities a
and -2σ C/m2 are arranged vertically with a
separation of d between them. Deduce expressions
for the electric field at points
(i) to the left of the first sheet,
(ii) to the right of the second sheet, and
(iii) between the two sheets. [3]
