Left side of front panel The instrument panel (1) includes a tachometer, four gauges, and several indicators
that display the machine systems status. An LCD screen displays the service hour
meter, machine ground speed, actual gear, and direction.

The access light switch (2) controls the LED lights, which illuminate both stairways
and the area behind the access door on the right side of the hood. There is also an
access light switch on the front bumper.

Other switches on the left side of the dash are the headlights/parking lights/taillights
switch (3), the hazard flasher switch (4), and the panel light switch (5).

Located on the left side of the steering column are the telescopic/tilt steering column

Right side dash Switches to the left of the Advisor display are the ARC ON/OFF switch (1), the engine
brake switch (2), and the front brake disable switch (3).

The ARC switch allows the operator to select a gear appropriate for the downgrade.
If necessary, the manual retarder control lever can be used to apply more retarding
force.

If the engine brake switch is ON and the ARC switch is ON, engine compression
braking is used on a downgrade and not the rear mechanical brakes. The front
caliper brakes are used only in conjunction with the service brake pedal to slow and
stop the truck, not retarding. If more retarding is necessary, the manual retarder
control lever can be used to apply more engine compression braking.

If the engine brake switch is OFF and the ARC switch is ON, retarding on a downgrade
is accomplished by using only the rear mechanical brakes. If more retarding is
necessary, the manual retarder control lever can be used to apply more mechanical
braking.

Below the dash to the right of the steering wheel are the key start switch (4), fan
speed switch (5), temperature variable knob (6), air conditioner switch (7), and
cigarette lighter (8). Above the HVAC controls is the Advisor display (9).

This photo does not show the proper decal surrounding the key start switch. These
trucks have a four position switch for the following functions:

• Engine idle shutdown (1)

• OFF (2)

• ON (3)

• START (4)

The engine idle shutdown feature allows the operator, after machine operation, up to
ten minutes of engine idle time to allow multiple systems to cool down. The operator
rotates the key start switch all the way to the left (counterclockwise) to activate this
function. These three conditions must be met for this to occur: transmission control
in PARK, service brakes released, and accelerator pedal released.

Right side of steering column Located on the right side of the steering column is the retarder lever (1). The retarder
lever is used to modulate engagement of the rear service brakes. When the retarder
lever is moved, the retarder lever sensor (2) sends a signal to the Brake ECM. The
Brake ECM sends a corresponding signal to the brake solenoids to engage the rear
service brakes.

The retarder lever can control the modulation of the service brakes more precisely
than the service brake pedal located on the cab floor.

Right console components To the right of the operator’s seat is the shift console, which contains the transmission
shift lever (1) and the hoist control lever (2). The 773G/775G trucks have SEVEN
speeds FORWARD and ONE REVERSE.

The top gear limit and body up gear limit are programmable through the Transmission/
Chassis ECM. The top gear limit can be changed from THIRD to SEVENTH. The
body up gear limit can be changed from FIRST to THIRD. The drive gear UP
switch (3) is located on the front of the transmission shift lever and the drive gear
DOWN switch (4) is located on the left side of the lever. The drive gear switches
are toggle switches that send a signal to the Transmission/Chassis ECM. When
the drive gear UP switch is pressed, the high gear limit can be increased up to
seventh gear. When the drive gear DOWN switch is pressed, the high gear limit can
be decreased down to third gear. The transmission shift lever lock button (5) unlocks
the transmission shift lever when pressed.

The two drive gear switches are also used to check the parking brakes. With the
engine running, the operator holds both switches down and moves the shift lever to
DRIVE and increases the engine rpm to 1200. The truck should not move. If it does,
there is a problem with the parking brake system.

The 773G/775G truck’s hoist system is electronically controlled. The hoist control
lever activates the four positions of the hoist control valve. The four positions are:
RAISE, HOLD, FLOAT, and LOWER. A fifth position of the hoist valve is called the
SNUB position. The operator does not have control over the SNUB position.

Caterpillar: Confidential Yellow

SERV1921 - 09/11 -11- Module 1 - Operator's Station

The truck should normally be operated with the hoist lever in the FLOAT position.
Traveling with the hoist in the FLOAT position will make sure the weight of the body
is on the frame and body pads and not on the hoist cylinders. The hoist valve will
actually be in the SNUB position.

If the transmission is in REVERSE when the body is being raised, the hoist lever
sensor is used to shift the transmission to NEUTRAL. The transmission will remain
in NEUTRAL until:

• the hoist lever is moved into the HOLD or FLOAT position; and

• the shift lever has been cycled into and out of NEUTRAL.

The hoist lever is also used to start a new TPMS cycle.

NOTE: If the truck is started with the body raised and the hoist lever in FLOAT,
the lever must be moved into HOLD and then FLOAT before the body will
lower.

The throttle back-up and throttle lock switch (7) and a 12V power port (8) are also
located on the shift console.

The throttle back-up section is used if there is a malfunction with the accelerator
pedal. The operator can use the switch to raise the engine speed to 1300 rpm in
order to drive the truck to the service area. This is accomplished by holding down the
top half of the switch. After the truck is in the service area, releasing the switch will
cause the engine to return to low idle.

The throttle lock section maintains engine speed at full throttle without depressing
the accelerator pedal. This function is set to allow the operator to use it in the full
gear range.

A power window has been added to the left side of the cab. The power window switch
(6) on the shift console controls the power window.

Overhead console switches The overhead console can be equipped with the following switches:

• Prewired for custom application (1)

• Work light switch (2)

• Heated mirror switch (3)

• Traction Control System (TCS) test switch (4)

• Brake release and secondary steering test switch (6)

775G trucks with a Tier 4 engine are equipped with a three-way economy mode
switch (5). The economy mode switch positions are:

• Automatic Economy Mode (top)

• OFF (middle)

• Manual Economy Mode (lower)

Caterpillar: Confidential Yellow

SERV1921 - 09/11 -13- Module 1 - Operator's Station

The engine provides full power in the OFF position. In the Automatic Mode, the Engine
ECM calculates the most economical power based on the operating conditions. In
the Manual Mode, the Engine ECM selects a power reduction that ranges from
0.5% - 15%. In the Manual Mode, the amount of power reduction is configured in the
Engine ECM in increments of 0.5% using Advisor or Cat ET.

Floor of cab Located on the floor of the cab are:

• Operator foot rest (1): Standard.

• Secondary brake pedal (2): Used to modulate application of the parking

brakes. A position sensor is attached to the secondary brake pedal that
provides input signals to the Brake ECM.

• Service brake pedal (3): The service brake pedal is used to modulate
engagement of the service brakes at the rear wheels with the
mechanical service brake valve. A position sensor is attached to the
service brake pedal that provides input signals to the Brake ECM. If the
front brake switch is in the ON position and the operator is depressing
the pedal, an output signal from the Brake ECM is directed to the front
brake manifold, which controls the pressure to the front brakes. If the
front brake switch is in the OFF position and the operator is depressing
the pedal, only the rear brakes are applied.

• Throttle pedal (4): A throttle position sensor is attached to the throttle

pedal. The throttle position sensor provides the throttle position input
signals to the Engine ECM.
