Adaptation over millenia has allowed the natural world to flourish, with
changes suited to environmental challenges, threats from predators, and an
unequivocal desire to thrive amongst the competition. Biomimicry repurposes
these principals into the human world, taking inspiration from the order of the
natural world and applying this onto human artefacts. This could be as simple
as the way the cockleburr inspired velcro strap works or as grandiose as a
bird-like aeroplane soaring through the skies. I look to apply the lessons of
the natural world into the fashion industry, creating an amalgamation of the
two realms.

“The design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modelled
on biological entities and processes.”
“Biomimicry is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies found in nature to
solve human design challanges.”

1989 Japanese bullet train had
noise and performace issues. A
designer Eiji Nakatsu decided to
re-design the train taking
Pantograph
Redesigned, in 1997, the bullet train takes inspiration from the nose of a kingfisher, the
pantograph inspired by owl feathers and the base of the pantopgraph from the belly of a
penguin, this train was 10% faster, used 15% less electricity and stayed under 70db.

Considerations
Something I want to explore in terms of sustainability is recycled fabrics and this could be
acheived by using one piece of multi-purposeful clothing which can been inspired by the
changing nature of animals. The big issue with the fashion industry is people buying lots of
clothes because of the consumerism that plagues society. Inadvertently, this is terrible for the
enviroment. My idea is to create a streetwear piece such as a jumper which can be velcroed,
zipped or tied differently to create for example a dynamic t-shirt.
