Activity no. 1: READ AND CRITIQUE? (refer to pg. 2-3)

In this topic, we will now know and read the summary of The Story of Keesh, a story written by Jack London and you will do the activity
that follow.

This is a story written by American novelist, journalist, and social activist John Griffith London or also known as Jack London.

The Story of Keesh is about a man who "exercised headcraft and not witchcraft, and rose from the meanest IGLOO to be head man of his
village." London's story was published in 1907.

The Story of Keesh

By Jack London

--A Summary--

Keesh is the son of a well-known and respected huntsman in his tribe, who died when Keesh was young. The exploits of his
father were long forgotten after that.

As Keesh turned 13, brimming with confidence and due to the rare amount of food gathered by the tribe, he addressed to the
village elders and said that he will become a great hunter like his father.

Everyone mocked him and allowed him to go off on his own. They did not expect to hear from him again. However, he returned
four days after, carrying a huge amount of freshly killed meat.

He said that the polar bear’s carcass laid a day’s travel from the village. Everyone was shocked of his success. However, several
hunts after, everyone became skeptical of Keesh, saying that he studied witchcraft but they have no choice but to be loyal.

The villagers constructed an igloo bigger than the chief’s for Keesh, which he appreciated. After several hunts, they decided to
have two scouts observe Keesh.

Several days later, they returned with the carcass of a polar bear. The scouts told the tale the tribal council couldn’t believe. They
gathered in Keesh’s igloo and accused him of witchcraft.

Keesh, however, explained the reason he was able to kill the bear. Keesh ordered the scouts to enrage the bear and follow him.
He then left small balls of food on the ice, which the bear ate. The bear then became ill and deranged, which enables Keesh to spear the
animal without harming himself.

A Tribute Speech to Parents

Today, I am thankful to be given a chance to speak about the people that truly has a great influence in my life,
my parents. To me, they have all the traits there is to a perfect parent. They never hesitate to give me what I
need in order to succeed. Back when I used to stay at the dormitory, I would be worried about them having to
travel far just to get me whatever is necessary for school; I would be sad about the amount of money they have
to spend for fare. But despite all of the worries I have, I learned to trust them and rely on them when needed.
They taught me to never worry about expenses because it is their job as parents to provide for me. They are the
very reason that I have stopped thinking negatively about what I am capable of as a student. They always listen
whenever I have something troubling me, and they try to understand more of my situation in order to assist me.
Now, my parents still have not changed. They still care for me the same way ever since I came to this world,
and I am forever thankful to them for that. There were times as a child I have neglected their guidance, and my
mother would always be the one to discipline me. I still remember the time when I was in the second grade, I

ENGLISH 10 • AJ SAYSON • JHS |PAGE 4

decided to visit my friend’s house after school without their consent, I came home very late and my mother was
not there, soon I found out that she was looking all over for me at school. My mother had to discipline me
because she was very worried. My father would always be the last to talk to me after my mom, he makes sure to
comfort me when I cry whenever I get disciplined. Unlike my mother, Dad has always been soft when
disciplining me. But even if there were times I made trouble, they made sure to discipline me without dragging
me to despair. Raising me, they made sure to never expose me to children who yell and throw tantrums, they
didn’t let other people tease me so that I may not grow up to be aggressive and angry. My parents have and will
always be the most important people in my life, I am blessed to have parents who are also role models. They
have given me every bit of their time to show support and love. Their hard work and dedication have always
given me the motivation and it is enough to have me move forward.
