CHAPTER 1

THE HISTORY OF THE PHILIPPINE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE TO

RONOGRAD

R
The unit traces its roots back to the first expeditionary force formed by the

O
Philippine Government to fight in the Korean War, it was the Philippine
Expeditionary Force to Korea otherwise known as PEFTOK, the unit was formed

FT
as a response to the UN request to all member states to help repel the invading
North Koreans from South Korea.
Then President Elpidio Quirino stated that the Philippines was sending the

PE
Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea (PEFTOK) in fulfillment of the country’s
obligation as a co-signer of the United Nations Charter.

The Philippines sent five Battalion Combat Teams (BCTs) known as the
PEFTOK with a total number of 7,420 personnel.
of

On 19 September 1950, the Philippines’ 10th Battalion Combat Team (BCT)

with about 1,400 men landed at the port of Busan as the first of the five BCTs that
ty

would serve under the United Nations Command (UNC) in Korea for the period
1950-1955. It was the eighth UNC ground combat unit to enter the Korean War.
er

The unit took part in the Battle of Miudong (which was hailed as the first
op

battle won by Filipino soldiers in a foreign soil), the Battle of Hill Eerie and the
legendary Battle of Yultong where 900 Filipino soldiers from the 10th Battalion
Combat Team (“The Fighting Filipinos”) stood their ground against 3000 Chinese
Pr

soldiers from the 34th Division PVA and 44th Division PVA who were attacking
from all sides.

The battle lasted from 20:00 on 22 April to 12:15 on 23 April, the Filipino
force successfully defended their position and was able to launch a counterattack
against Chinese-held positions until they received orders from Gen. Robert Soule

4

Ari-arian ng Pilipinas
to fall back, the Filipinos inflicted heavy casualties to the Chinese force where
500+ were KIA and 2 were captured meanwhile the Filipino casualties were
minimal as 12 were KIA, 38 were wounded and 6 were MIA.

The battle became one of the factors that slowed the Chinese and North
Korean offensive and changed the tide of battle until both sides reached a

R
stalemate, securing South Korea’s survival and independence; it also gave the 10th
BCT their famous nickname “The Fighting Filipinos”.

O
A total of 7,420 Filipino officers and men served in Korea. They suffered

FT
116 killed in action, 299 wounded and 57 missing (41 repatriated during POW
exchanges). The last of the Philippine troops left Korea on 13 May 1955, the unit
officially disbanded after the departure.

PE
In August 2020, the expeditionary force was formed once again under a new
name, The Philippine Expeditionary Force to Ronograd, they have a new mission
in mind which is the liberation of Ronograd from the occupying insurgent force.
The unit took part in Operation Viper and the ongoing Operation Resurgence.
