Dr. Jose Rizal
Noli Me Tangere

 Jose Rizal started writing the first part of Noli Me Tangere in 1884 in
Madrid when he was still studying medicine. After his studies, he went to
Paris and there continued writing the novel. And it was in Berlin that
Rizal finished the last part.

 In 1887, he published his novel, Noli Me Tangere, written in Spanish.

That same year, he retured to Manila, where Noli me Tangere had been
banned and its author now hated intensely by the friars.

 It‟s been said that Rizal was inspired to write the Noli after reading
Harriet Beecher Stowe‟s work Uncle Tom‟s Cabin, which deals with the
story of black slaves and their white slave masters.

 He planned to have each part of the novel be written by different

countrymen familiar with Philippine society and then compile those parts
into a novel. But that plan did not come to fruition, so he ended up
writing it without any help.

 The title Noli Me Tangere is Latin for “Touch Me Not,” which is taken
from the Gospel of John in the Bible.

 John 20:17

Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to
the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, „I am ascending to
my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'”

El Filibusterismo

0
 El Filibusterismo, the second of José Rizal‟s novels of Philippine life, is a
story of the last days of the Spanish régime in the Philippines. Under the
name of The Reign of Greed it is for the first time translated into English.

 Written some four or five years after Noli Me Tangere, the book
represents Rizal‟s more mature judgment on political and social conditions
in the islands, and in its graver and less hopeful tone reflects the
disappointments and discouragements which he had encountered in his
efforts to lead the way to reform. Rizal‟s dedication to the first edition is
of special interest, as the writing of it was one of the grounds of
accusation against him when he was condemned to death in 1896.

 A dark, brooding, at times satirical novel of revenge, unfulfilled love, and

tragedy, the Fili (as it is popularly referred to) still has as its protagonist
Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra.

 El Filibusterismo addresses topics of great importance to the movement,

namely clerical abuses, racism against the Philippine people, and the need
for political reform.

 Rizal wrote El Filibusterismo in dedication to the three martyred priests

Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, expressing conviction
that their treatment and deaths at the hands of the Spanish authorities
was unjust.
Noli Me Tangere

And

El Filibusterismo
are the two marked novels of our
Noli Me Tangere national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal which
are similar and different in some
& ways. The two novels are similar
primarily in their author, Rizal.
El Filibusterismo Another, in a way that they both talk
about how Spaniards abused the Filipinos, the abuse of the church of their
power and the discrimination on Filipinos. Both Noli and El Fili show
strong anti-Clerical and even anti-Catholic color. They convey one story
because the latter is published in sequel or continuation.

Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo have similarities in terms of aim

and purpose. Written by the same author and has the same characters,
both aims to enlighten the Filipinos on what is happening in the country.
They want to have freedom for the country but used a contrasting way to
achieve it. Both books have shown the cruelty that the Filipinos
experienced under the Spanish rule. Also, both books have expressed the
actual condition of the country and how it's affecting the lives of everyone,
and social cancer issues projected by the characters of the novels. These
two novels with a broad topic are touted as the novels that deal with a
revolution and the rise of nationalism amongst the people.

Both of Rizal's novels had a profound effect on Philippine society in terms

of national identity, religious faith and create an influence on his
countrymen's choice Ibarra who is on a path of a well-composed life. He
was able to finishhis studies and return back home to obey his father's
will. On the other side, El Filibusterismo of government issues about
corruption and abuses. The contrast between the two novels is, Noli me
Tangere portrays a side of Crisostomo creates new characteristics for
Crisostomo Ibarra who is someone that is brave and full of plans to make
