CCP Arts Academy 2022

Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental
July 31 – August 6, 2022

On July 31, 2022, three teacher-specialists from the Special Program in the Arts (SPA)
department attended the week-long specialized workshops in Dumaguete City conducted by the
Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) titled CCP Arts Academy 2022. They are Benster G. Comia
for Film, Howard Bong M. Abao for Music, and Jan Christian D. Cabarrubias for Visual Arts.
Particularly held at Silliman University, the campus by the bay of NegOr, the event was joined
by almost 200 teachers of SPA and Arts and Design track all over the country who wanted to continue
their training in respective arts disciplines.
The CCP Arts Academy is specially designed that provided the teacher participants (non-
beginners) with professional and specialized training on different art forms that built capacities and
advanced their artistic development by focusing on production and performance techniques,
principles/processes, and art knowledge and skills, and pedagogical approaches. Before coming to the
academy, the participants carefully applied. They were screened by CCP programmers/experts. Thus,
only 30 participants composed each arts discipline.
B. Comia attended the Film workshop under internationally awarded filmmaker Director Elvert
Bañarez. All the participants here stepped in the filmmaker’s shoes that armed them with the skills in
creating community film productions and helped them in appraising various cinematic and
multimedia works, mirroring classic masterpieces. This was an immersive workshop that affirmed the
participants' love for excellent regional aesthetics that made regional films a source of the country’s
pride.
H. Abao joined the workshop entitled, Intro to Music Production: Creating Music Using
Technology under Juni Jay Tinambacan, a Silliman University Faculty member. Here, they explored
the process of developing, creating, and refining a piece of music using technology. They were also
taught the skills and techniques on how music can be created, captured from composition to
recording, and sound design for distribution and performance.
J. Cabarrubis meanwhile attended the visual arts workshop titled, The DIY Image:
Experimental Approaches to Photo, Video and Internet Art under its resource speakers W Don Flores,
AK Ocol, and Ramon del Prado. The participants were immersed in a series of lectures and hands-on
workshops that explored the potential of massively accessible tech-based processes and platforms –
including phone cameras, memes, animation, and social media – that expanded the scope, richness,
and vitality of visual arts in today’s classroom.
The weeklong event ended with a culminating program that showcased the colorful outputs of
respective art disciplines from poetry reading, dance, and music performances to visual and film
showcases. Truly, the CCP Arts Academy is an annual event that teachers of the culture and arts have
long been waiting for its prestige, effectiveness, and reputation.
