Date of submission : 24th Aug 2023, Thursday
[Q.1] What do you mean by curvilinear motion of a particle? Derive an expression for tangential and
normal components of acceleration of a particle while moving in a curvilinear path.
[Q.2] Derive an expression for radial and transverse components of velocity and acceleration of a particle
while moving in a curvilinear path.
[Q.3] Show that the motion of a projectile can be expressed by a set of two rectilinear motion.
[Q.4] The motion of a particle is defined by the equations x=4t3-5t2+5t and y= 5t2-15t, where x and y are
expressed in millimeters and t is expressed in seconds. Determine the velocity and the acceleration
when: (a) t=1s, (b) t=2s.

meters and t in seconds. Determine the velocity, acceleration and radius of curvature when t=1sec.
[Q.6] A projectile is fired from the edge of a 150-m cliff with an initial velocity of 180 m/s at an angle of
30° with the horizontal. Neglecting air resistance, find (a) the horizontal distance from the gun to
the point where the projectile strikes the ground, (b) the greatest elevation above the ground reached
by the projectile. [Ans: 3100m, 563m ]
[Q.7] A projectile is fired with an initial velocity of 800 ft/s at a target B located 2000 ft above the gun A
and at a horizontal distance of 12,000 ft. Neglecting air resistance, determine the value of the firing
angle . [Ans: = 29.50 or 700 ]
[Q.8] Automobile A is traveling east at the constant speed of 36 km/h. As automobile A crosses the
intersection shown, automobile B starts from rest 35 m north of the intersection and moves south
with a constant acceleration of 1.2 m/s2. Determine the position, velocity, and acceleration of B
relative to A 5s after A crosses the intersection. [Ans: 53.9m <158.20,11.66m/s<2110,1.2m/s2

[Q.9] Water flows from a drain spout with an initial velocity of 2.5 ft/s at an angle of 15° with the
horizontal. Determine the range of values of the distance d for which the water will enter the trough

[Q.10] The rotation of the 0.9m arm OA about O is defined by the relation v= 0.15t2, where v is expressed
in radians and t in seconds. Collar B slides along the arm in such a way that its distance from O is
r= 0.9- 0.12t2, where r is expressed in meters and t in seconds. After the arm OA has rotated through
30°, determine (a) the total velocity of the collar, (b) the total acceleration of the collar, (c) the
relative acceleration of the collar with respect to the arm. [Ans: v=0.524 m/s β=31.0°, a=0.531m/s2

[Q.11] A motorist is traveling on a curved section of highway of radius 2500 ft at the speed of 60 mi/h. The
motorist suddenly applies the brakes, causing the automobile to slow down at a constant rate.
Knowing that after 8 s the speed has been reduced to 45 mi/h, determine the acceleration of the
automobile immediately after the brakes have been applied.
[Q.12] The motion of a particle is defined by the position vector 𝑟⃗=3t2𝑖̂+4t3𝑗̂+5t4𝑘̂ where r is in meter and t
is in second. At the instant when t=4sec, find the normal and tangential component of acceleration
and the principal radius of curvature.
[Q.13] The rectangular components of acceleration for a particle are a x=3t and ay=(25-10t), where ‘a’ is in
m/s2 and ‘t’ in seconds. If the particle starts from rest at the origin, find the radius of curvature of the
path at the instant of 2 seconds.
[Q.14] The plane curvilinear motion of a particular is defined in polar coordinates r=t 3/4 +3t and = 0.5t2.

magnitude of velocity, acceleration and radius of curvature of the path.
