SC

The SC works to promote the establishment and maintenance of international peace and security with the least
diversion for armament of the world’s human and economic resources. To ensure that its mission is
accomplished and its mandate maintained, the UNSC utilizes a wide array of powers including peacekeepers,
peace enforcement, and sanctions.

UNHRC
The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system responsible for
strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of
human rights violations and make recommendations on them. It has the ability to discuss all thematic human
rights issues and situations that require its attention throughout the year. It meets at the UN Office at Geneva.

UNW
In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender
Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took a historic step in accelerating
the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came
about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges
and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively
on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

WHO
With a mandate for “the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health,” WHO has developed
more than 50 programs related to health education, humanitarian health assistance, and worldwide programs to
eradicate disease. Topics discussed by the World Health Organization include HIV/AIDS, pandemics, climate
change, communicable diseases, and maternal health. In the past few years WHO has shown to be the
international authority on epidemics, as it played a major role in the response to the Ebola outbreak in 2014.
SOCHUM
The Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), focuses on issues dealing with fundamental
human rights in the international community. SOCHUM promotes and enforces basic freedoms and ideals meant
to be enjoyed by the entire international community such as the right to life, the expression of cultures, the
freedom of political participation, the protection of children’s rights, and the promotion of social development,
among many others. The committee designs peaceful settlements for issues within the large spectrum of social,
humanitarian, and cultural complications in the international community. It does so by initiating studies that
encourage the proposal of recommendations for the promotion of international cooperation and fundamental
freedoms for all.

UNICEF
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is an agency of the United Nations (UN) that was created in
1946 due to the vital need for aid after World War II. UNICEF was created as a kind of effort to resolve the
major healthcare and food shortage issues for children in wartorn nations. When it was established, the
organization was known as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. In 1950, it extended its
efforts and began concentrating on the long-term needs of women and children in developing countries. UNICEF
became an enduring agency of the UN in 1954, and its name was shortened to United Nations Children’s Fund.
The original acronym “UNICEF” was kept. Currently, UNICEF works to help governments improve the health
and education of women and children. UNICEF’s work is carried out in 191 countries and territories.

DISEC
The First Committee deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international
community and seeks out solutions to the challenges in the international security regime.

DISEC considers all disarmament and international security matters within the scope of the Charter or relating to
the powers and functions of any other organ of the United Nations; the general principles of cooperation in the
maintenance of international peace and security, as well as principles governing disarmament and the regulation
of armaments; promotion of cooperative arrangements and measures aimed at strengthening stability through
lower levels of armaments.

The Committee works in close cooperation with the United Nations Disarmament Commission and the Geneva-
based Conference on Disarmament. It is the only Main Committee of the General Assembly entitled to verbatim
records coverage.
SPECPOL
SPECPOL (Special Political and Decolonization Committee) is The United Nations General Assembly Fourth
Committee out of its six main committees.

When the system of main committees was created, the Fourth Committee was responsible for trusteeship and
decolonization-related matters. After the dismantling of the trusteeship system — resulting from independence
being granted to all the trust territories and the sharp reduction in the number of non-self-governing territories —
the Fourth Committee’s workload decreased. As a result, the Fourth Committee was merged with the Special
Political Committee, which had been created as a seventh committee of the whole to deal with certain political
issues after the General Assembly found that the First Committee (originally the Political and Security
Committee) was too busy.

SPECPOL deals with decolonization, Palestinian refugees and human rights, peacekeeping, mine action, outer
space, public information, atomic radiation and the University for Peace.

UNODC
UNODC is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs and international crime. Established in 1997 through a
merger between the United Nations Drug Control Program and the Centre for International Crime Prevention,
UNODC operates in all regions of the world through an extensive network of field offices. UNODC relies on
voluntary contributions, mainly from Governments, for 90 per cent of its budget.

UNEP
The United Nations Environment Program (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that
sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of
sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global
environment.

informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future
generations.
IAEA
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is widely known as the world’s “Atoms for Peace”
organization within the United Nations family. Set up in 1957 as the world’s center for cooperation in the nuclear
field, the Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and
peaceful use of nuclear technologies.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is an international organization which provides the idea of a peaceful
use of nuclear energy and strongly inhibits the use of any military actions, including nuclear weapons. For this
matter, it supports with implementing safeguards against misuse of nuclear energy as well as security standards.
It serves as an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation and reports to both the United
Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

ILO
The International Labor Organization is a specialized instrument of the United Nations and as with other
specialized UN bodies; it is a member of the United Nations Development group.

The ILO was founded in 1919, in the wake of a destructive war, to pursue a vision based on the premise that
universal, lasting peace can be established only if it is based on social justice. The ILO became the first
specialized agency of the UN in 1946.The only tripartite U.N. agency, since 1919 the ILO brings together
governments, employers and workers of 187 member States, to set labor standards, develop policies and devise
programs promoting decent work for all women and men. The main aims of the ILO are to promote rights at
work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue on work-
related issues.
