A Reflection on the Movie Heneral Luna

Most of us were just focused on the heroes we always heard about and what was more prominently
mentioned that we neglected to give credit or appreciate the passion, intelligence and sacrifice of
other heroes, just like Heneral Luna. The movie Heneral Luna talks about Antonio Luna, a general in
the late 1800's who led the Philippine Army during the Philippine-American War. Heneral Luna
movie, without a doubt, is a piece of art. To see the film for the first time even though some scenes
does not seem to be real but still we can point out that it is not biased. The scenes seemed to be fair
to both Philippines and America in where it does not praise the two countries. It showed us the
political inclinations of the time and the significant influence politics had on individual choices as
well as those of humanity. It was also great that the director included Joven Hernando, a student,
writer, and young patriot, as a character. Joven is a representation of us, the younger generation,
who are curious and constantly asking questions about the past, particularly the history of the
Philippines and the life and death of a national hero. Moreover, the movie greatly praises Antonio
Luna for being one of the best generals of the time who stood up to the self-absorbed officials who
only cared about their own life during the struggle of independence from the colonizer.
Furthermore, after seeing the film, I've come to the realization that even in previous decades, there
was no unity among Filipinos because, based on what I've seen, many people are against Heneral
Luna and people are more convinced to collaborate with the Americans since we will benefit more
from them such as in terms of business. Additionally, people in those days were blind, unable to see
what needed to be done, where they should stand, or even who the true leader was. In this regard,
Heneral Lune expressed the statement "Ganito ba talaga ang tadhana natin?" since we have not our
own independence to do what we want since we are afraid, hiding in the shadows of those invaders,
and can't even decide for ourselves. Aside from that, Heneral Luna put his life at risk to fight for our
freedom but still there were people who are against and wanted to stop him by killing him. Thus, the
movie is a real eye-opener. The movie wanted to show us the meaning of patriotism and being
selflessness and fearlessness represented by Heneral Antonio Luna. He showed love for our country
despite of all consequences he had faced along the way, and because of that, I have come to an idea
that he was really a hero.
