Lilly loves her new town. She loves the mall. She loves the parks. She also loves her school.
Most of all, though, Lilly loves the seasons.
In her old town, it was hot all of the time. Sometimes it is cold in Lilly's new town. The cold
season is in winter. Once in a while it snows. Lilly has never seen snow before. So for her, the
snow is exciting as well as very beautiful. Lilly has to wear gloves to keep her hands warm. She
also wears a scarf around her neck.
In spring, flowers bloom and the trees turn green with new leaves. Pollen falls on the cars and
windowsills and makes Lilly sneeze. People work in their yards and mow their grass. In summer,
Lilly wears her old shorts and sandals— the same ones she used to wear in her old town. It’s hot
outside, and dogs lie in the shade. Lilly and her friends go to a pool or play in the water
sprinkler. Her father cooks hamburgers on the grill for dinner.
Lilly’s favorite season is autumn. In autumn, the leaves on the trees turn yellow, gold, red,
and orange. Halloween comes in autumn, and this is Lilly’s favorite holiday. Every Halloween,
Lilly wears a costume. Last year she wore a mouse costume. This year she will wear a fish
costume.
One evening in autumn, Lilly and her mom are on sitting together on the porch. Mom tells

they met over the web.

The study, also revealed that more than half of the 1,504 people questioned had been on a

WHAT KIND OF FRIEND ARE YOU?

This week, we take a look at different kinds of friends.

Dedicated Friends (DFs)

DFs put their friends and family first. If you have a problem, they will discuss the
situation with you and try to help you fix it. If you need money, a DF will lend it to you.
DFs don’t suddenly appear. It takes months or years for a person to become a DF. But one
thing is sure, the best way to find and keep a DF is to be a DF yourself.

Enthusiastic Friends (EFs)

EFs may not be the friends who will lend you money or help you solve your problems,
but they will show you how to get the most out of life. EFs are adventurous and want to try
everything - exotic foods, roller coasters, adventure vacations, you name it! They’re also
optimistic. They’ll get you to go camping with them, and if it rains, they’ll find other ways
to have a good time. EFs look on the bright side and get you to do the same.

Wise Friends (WFs)

WFs know your problems and the answers to them, but they will wait for you to bring
them up first. When you’re ready to discuss, WFs will listen carefully and help you find
your own solutions. If you ask them what to do and you don’t follow their advice, they
won’t bring the problem up again. Unlike DFs, WFs won’t lend you money if they think
you will have trouble paying it back or if they think you will use it for something that isn’t
good for you.

Tiger Moth, an aeroplane from the 1930s. When he landed he said, ‘That was a fantastic experience! I’ve

Questions 57 through 60 refer to the following passage.

This week three of our readers explain why they travel....

Many people travel to learn about foreign cultures and go sightseeing. Well, for me, there’s a
more important reason. I used to travel with friends, but lately I prefer traveling alone. When I
traveled with my friends, we were always compromising. I prefer camping, but they always had to
stay in nice hotels. I like getting up early, but they preferred to sleep late. I work hard all year, so to
me, vacation time should be “me” time - a time for seeing new places and having new experiences,
but most of all, a time for getting to know the real me. -Dana

I love traveling because it gives my husband and me a chance to leave all the problems of work
behind us and really focus on our sons. They’re very young, so we go on trips that are close to our
home in California. We have a big van that we use for camping (I think my husband married me
because I’ve never liked hotels!), and we’ve used it for road trips to several national parks around
here. We think it’s important to teach the kids to appreciate nature, and we find it’s more relaxing to
stay close to home. We don’t like worrying about being late and missing a flight, and we hate
airports. -Sheila

I used to travel because I love learning about different cultures outside of the United States, but
five years ago I started traveling to “give back.” My past trips - especially to countries that are not
as rich as the United States - have helped me realize how lucky I am. Now I travel because I’m
interested in “voluntourism” - traveling as a volunteer. Last year I taught English to village children
in Haiti. This year I’m going to Africa to help doctors at a hospital in Kenya. The people appreciate
our work, and that makes me feel good about myself. -Wanda

Question 57: Why does Dana prefer to travel by herself?

A. She wishes to discover her real self.
B. She wants to learn about cultures and go sightseeing.
C. She couldn’t compromise with her friends about the journey.
D. She likes nice hotels and getting up late.
Question 58: Who might like going to a rain forest to help scientists on their vacation?
A. Dana B. Wanda C. Sheila D. Dana and Sheila
Question 59: What does the phrase “give back” in paragraph 3 mean?
Page 13/14 – Paper Code: ENGL3570
A. discover B. help C. return D. enjoy
Question 60: Which of the following is NOT mentioned as the reason why Sheila wants to go on trips
close to her home in California?
A. Her sons are very young.
B. She doesn’t have to worry about missing a flight.
C. It’s more relaxing to stay near her home.
D. California has national parks.
