Re: Great idea!
Reiko,
Thank you for suggestion about (25) ______ our unused computer equipment. I just looked into
the program you recommended in the Aoyama school district. After speaking with the principals of
three different schools, I am (26) ______that we have plenty of equipment that may be useful to
students. Like you said, many of our computers are still in good working order even though they no
longer fulfil our needs. In exchange for our computers, two of the schools have offered to advertise
our company in their yearbook.
To thank you for taking this initiative, I have nominated you for Employee of the Month. There
are no other (27) ________ at this time, so you have a good chance at winning. This month’s prize
is a weekend for two at a ski resort in Hokkaido.
Good luck!
Koji
Lilly loves her new town. She loves the mall. She loves the parks. She also loves her school.
Most of all, though, Lilly loves the seasons.
In her old town, it was hot all of the time. Sometimes it is cold in Lilly's new town. The cold
season is in winter. Once in a while it snows. Lilly has never seen snow before. So for her, the
snow is exciting as well as very beautiful. Lilly has to wear gloves to keep her hands warm. She
also wears a scarf around her neck.
In spring, flowers bloom and the trees turn green with new leaves. Pollen falls on the cars and
windowsills and makes Lilly sneeze. People work in their yards and mow their grass. In summer,
Lilly wears her old shorts and sandals— the same ones she used to wear in her old town. It’s hot
outside, and dogs lie in the shade. Lilly and her friends go to a pool or play in the water
sprinkler. Her father cooks hamburgers on the grill for dinner.
Lilly’s favorite season is autumn. In autumn, the leaves on the trees turn yellow, gold, red,
and orange. Halloween comes in autumn, and this is Lilly’s favorite holiday. Every Halloween,
Lilly wears a costume. Last year she wore a mouse costume. This year she will wear a fish
costume.
One evening in autumn, Lilly and her mom are on sitting together on the porch. Mom tells
Lilly that autumn is also called “fall”. This is a good idea, Lilly thinks, because in fall all of the
leaves fall down from the trees.
The study, also revealed that more than half of the 1,504 people questioned had been on a
date with someone they met online. Sixty-two per cent agreed that it was easier to meet
someone on a dating site than in other ways, such as in a pub or club, or through friends. At the
same time, the under-35s were more likely to know someone who had been on a date or had a
long-term relationship with someone they met through online dating.
According to industry surveys, more than 22 million people visited dating websites in 2007,
and more than two million are signed up to single sites. Of the 147 couples who took part in the
study, 61 per cent, said their relationships had high levels of these three components. The
researchers also found that men were more likely to find true love on the internet than women.
Charlotte Harper, of Match.com, said: ‘We were excited to find so many of our former
members have found love. It supports our belief that the internet does in fact encourage old-
fashioned courtship’.
There are many kinds of boats. One kind of boat is called a sailboat. A sailboat uses the wind to
move. Wind makes a sailboat move in the water. The wind pushes the sailboat. Wind fills the sails. The
sailboat moves when the wind blows. One kind of boat is called a motorboat. A motorboat uses a motor
to move. The motor gives power to the boat. The motorboat moves when the motor is running. The
motorboat makes a loud noise. One kind of boat is called a rowboat. A rowboat needs people to move
it. People make a rowboat move in the water. People use oars to move a rowboat. Oars are long and
flat. Oars go into the water. A rowboat moves when people use the oars. As you can see, there are
many kinds of boats.

A gift to remember
Are you looking for a gift that is different? Perhaps you don’t want to give your best friend or your
mum and dad the same presents as everyone else does. What can you buy that they will always
remember? Why not get them an ‘experience gift’?
The presents that people give have changed a lot in recent years and there has been a big rise in the
number of people giving ‘experience gifts’ to celebrate those special occasions. This can be a flying
lesson in a helicopter, a day on a race track, an afternoon in a hot air balloon or one of many other
experiences that companies are advertising.
These experiences are usually very exciting. An 80-year-old man celebrated his birthday by flying a
Tiger Moth, an aeroplane from the 1930s. When he landed he said, ‘That was a fantastic experience! I’ve
always wanted to go in a Tiger Moth. I never thought I could learn how to fly one. For my 90 th birthday I
want to drive a Ferrari round a race track!.
Many people travel to learn about foreign cultures and go sightseeing. Well, for me, there’s a
more important reason. I used to travel with friends, but lately I prefer traveling alone. When I
traveled with my friends, we were always compromising. I prefer camping, but they always had to
stay in nice hotels. I like getting up early, but they preferred to sleep late. I work hard all year, so to
me, vacation time should be “me” time - a time for seeing new places and having new experiences,
but most of all, a time for getting to know the real me. -Dana
I love traveling because it gives my husband and me a chance to leave all the problems of work
behind us and really focus on our sons. They’re very young, so we go on trips that are close to our
home in California. We have a big van that we use for camping (I think my husband married me
because I’ve never liked hotels!), and we’ve used it for road trips to several national parks around
here. We think it’s important to teach the kids to appreciate nature, and we find it’s more relaxing to
stay close to home. We don’t like worrying about being late and missing a flight, and we hate
airports. -Sheila
I used to travel because I love learning about different cultures outside of the United States, but
five years ago I started traveling to “give back.” My past trips - especially to countries that are not
as rich as the United States - have helped me realize how lucky I am. Now I travel because I’m
interested in “voluntourism” - traveling as a volunteer. Last year I taught English to village children
in Haiti. This year I’m going to Africa to help doctors at a hospital in Kenya. The people appreciate
our work, and that makes me feel good about myself. -Wanda
