DESIGN AIDS

▪ Design Aids → instead of plotting the pairs: Pn-Mn, corresponding

parameters: Kn-Rn are used to make the charts more generally applicable

▪ Design Aids: Kn→ representing load & Rn → representing moment

▪ Families of curves are drawn for various values of ρ between 0.01 and
0.08 (following the ACI reinforcing steel limits)

▪ These aids permit the direct design of eccentrically loaded columns

throughout the common range of strength and geometric variables

EXAMPLE

In a wind zone, a building will be working as a heavy

industry from 1st to 3rd floor; offices at 4th floor and restaurant
at 5th floor. All the floors (including roof) will consist in a solid
slab h = 100 mm. The first floor will be 3.4 m high
(architecture); the remaining stories are 3.0 m high.

Using f ´c = 28 MPa, fy = fyt = 420 MPa & Dsup by floors
'uses. For the internal column B3 (600 x 600) mm using
design aids, find: (i) the required column steel reinforcement
and (ii) the axial & bending design capacity.

The column will be testing

using Ec. (B.2.4-4):

Pu = 4800 [kN]

Mu = 400 [kN-m]

RC SHORT COLUMNS
Using design aids, the column
parameters are:
γ = (600 – 2 x 70)/600
0.73 γ = 0.77

So, We already have from R.4-60.7:

So, We already have:

Try:

Using design aids, determine Pn for

the short-tied column proposed.

RC SHORT COLUMNS
1. Find e/h
e = 83.33 [mm] & h = 600 [mm]
We have: e/h = 0.14
Assuming Kn = 0.80 → Rn ~ 0.11

Ast = 12N°7

Trial column cross-section 600 x 600 [mm]

2. Hence Rntrue ~ 0.10

We have: Pn = [f´c Agh]Rn/e
Hence: Pn|N-S = 7257.9 [kN]
Checking the CCF → ϕ = 0.65 [HW]
DCRp = Pu/ϕPn = 1.02 > 1.0 ¡NO!
22

RC SHORT COLUMNS

3. Since Rntrue ~ 0.10

We have: Mn = [f´c Agh]Rn
Hence: Mn|E-W = 604.80 [kN-m]
DCRb = Mu/ϕMn = 1.02 > 1.0 ¡NO!

Ast = 12N°7

Trial column cross-section 600 x 600 [mm]
