The ZeeWeed filtration unit consists of an aerobic bioreactor TSS Ave. 237 mg/L
combined with a separated ultra filtration system. The system re-

circulates the biological liquids over the bioreactor and filters the
treated effluent (permeate) before it is discharged. In addition to this, VSS/TSS Ave. 85 %
due to the nature of the membrane material, it retains dissolved solids Max. 85%
with a high molecular weight. This kind of pollution normally passes TKN Ave. 18.9 mg/L
through conventional filters and thickeners. With the ZeeWeed

filtration unit, the above-mentioned dissolved solids remain within the
reactor where further biological degradation can occur; the latter is NH4 Ave. 8.6 mg/L
achieved by the inherent long sludge retention time. The ultrafiltration Max. 17.4 mg/L
ZeeWeed membranes used are developed by Veolia. TP Ave. 6.1 mg/L
The ZeeWeed modules consist of a bundle of reinforced hollow fiber Max. 11 mg/L
membranes. Flow along the membrane surface is created by coarse Alkalinity Ave. 158 mg/L as
bubble aeration at the bottom of the membranes. A negative pressure
inside the hollow fibers is created by the suction of the permeate CaCO3
extraction pump (rotary lobe pump). The treated water (permeate) Max. 258 mg/L as
passes through the membrane, whereas all particles > 0.1 micron, CaCO3
including microorganisms, are rejected. Therefore the sludge
(biomass) can be concentrated easily to max. 12 g/l resulting in a low
bioreactor volume and extremely good effluent quality.

characteristics
The membrane filtration unit consists of:
• 2 biology tanks with an aeration system • Two trains of two cassettes of 22
ZW-500c (250 ft2 modules)
• 2 biology tank aeration blowers • Flux @ ADF = 11.2 LMH
• 2 filtration tanks, each with: • Flux @ MDF = 14.2 LMH
- 2 ZeeWeed cassettes (space for a third) • Flux @ ADF (N-1) = 22.4 LMH
- 2 recirculation pumps (duty/standby)

back to the bioreactor by the Recirculation pumps.
Permeate from the ZeeWeed filtration system will be
discharged continuously by the permeate pumps to the
permeate tank, from where it will be pumped to the
ozone system. For periodical backpulse purposes,
permeate in these tanks will be used to flush the
membranes.
