C) ASSUMPTIONS, NOTES AND COMMENTS:
1. All other pollutants other than mentioned above have been considered as nil at
the inlet of S.T.P which exceed the disposal standard as well as will adversely
affect the performance of biologicaltreatment.
2. Sewage generation shall be 24 hrs basis and Sewage shall be treated on 24 hrsbasis.
3. The plant design does not account for any toxic contamination from industries.
4. The plant shall function in aerobic condition only. Formation of any anaerobic
/ septic condition in the bio-reactor shall be prevented, under normal operating
conditions.
5. We have considered the peak factor as 3.0. The duration of peak loads is
considered as 3 hours. The treated water parameters are guaranteed for average
design flow and not for peakload.
6. Oil present if any shall be in free & floating.
7. Proper Mechanical ventilation (If Basement) with 16-20 air changes per hour
in the sewage treatment plant shall be provided by client.
D) PROCESS GUARANTEES
Our process guarantees are based on above mentioned design basis and
assumptions for present flow of 10 KLD.
E) SBR PROCESS
Bar Screen :-
Raw sewage from the source is usually received into the bar screen chamberby gravity. Screen
provided will remove all floating and big size matter, which may otherwise choke the pipeline and pumps.
Equalization Tank :-
Usually, Sewage generation is more during peak hours. Visually no Sewage is generated during shift
change or lean hours. Any biological system needs constant feed for bacteria to work efficiently.
Hence, itis important to put an equalization tank to collect the excess flow during peak hours and feed
Sewage in lean hours. A typical equalization tank has a capacity of 4-6 hours of average flow rate.
The tank is generally of civil construction by client. Provision of air grid is to be made for thoroughly
mixing the sewage to make it of homogenous quality and to keep the suspended matter in suspension
and to
avoid septic conditions. The well mixed sewage is then pumped into the reactor with the
helpof pumps.
The main pollutants in the raw sewage are represented in the form of Bio – chemical Oxygen Demand
(BOD)and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). The bacterial ability to synthesize the organic matter to
harmless end products like carbon di-oxide and water molecules is utilized to treat the raw sewage.
The bio – reactions are carried out in controlled environment in the bio – reactor. The bio – reactorcomprises
of a tank, fitted with jet aerators. The bacterial activity needs dissolved oxygen, to
synthesize the organic matter. The air is passed at the bottom of the tank, so that complete volume of
tankis utilized. Oxygen dissolves in liquid, which can now be used by the aerobic bacteria.
In the fill stage, the sewage from intermediate tank is pumped at a controlled rate, upto the
maximum level (of the tank). At this time the air supply to tank starts, imparting the dissolved
oxygen. The bacteriain the sewage synthesize the organic matter to harmless end products such as
carbon dioxide and water. This phase (aeration) continues for a specific period of time, after which
the aerators are automatically stopped. After stopping the aerators, the sewage is allowed to settle for
specific period of time, which is the settle phase. The biomass, which is heavier than water, settles to
After the settle phase, the clear supernatant is gradually withdrawn from the top 30 – 40 % of
the reactor height, to ensure that no solids escape out. The outlet valve opening is controlled by PLC. As the
set ‘low’ water level is reached (which is sensed by the ultrasonic level transmitter), the flap is closed, and
tank, by opening the ‘surplus sludge valve’, periodically. This opening is also controlled by thePLC. Surplus
sludge is stored in the sludge tank, and continuously aerated in absence of any fresh food. This makes the
bacterial population to enter ‘death phase’ thereby completely making the biomass as ‘dead’. This sludge is
All the above steps repeat sequentially, controlled by the preprogramme in panel.
Disinfection :-
The treated Sewage, is then added with chlorine to kill the pathogens / E-Coli coliforms, so that it becomes fit
for disposal in the lake / water ways. Chlorinebeing a very strong oxidising agent, a small dose of 6 mg /l is
enough to achieve desired levels of dis-infection. A small residual chlorine (of the orderof 0.2 – 0.25 mg / l)
also ensures that there is no re-growth of E-coli, till the final disposal point. The treated Sewage, now
substantially free from organic contamination, free from coliform bacteria can be safely disposed off in the
river, or in other water bodies. This water can also be re-used for gardening / toilet flushing or for other
The treated water after biological treatment is disinfected and then feed to Dual media filter (DMF) &Activated
carbon Filter (ACF with the help of centrifugal pump for removing suspended solids.
After removal of suspended solid from the treated (polished) water, is collected in Treated water Tank.
