1 DESIGN CONSIDERATION

1.1Design Capacity

 Feed for STP –15 m3/day

 Working period - 24 Hours
 Peak Factor 2.5
 Operation : Manual

1.2 Sewage Quality

1.2.1 Treatment Design Selection

Parameter Value Units

Flow 50 m3/day
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) 350 mg/lit
Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) 300 mg/lit
Total suspended solids 250 mg/lit
Oil & Grease 20-30 mg/lit
pH 7-8 -

1 Any adverse variation in the feed sewage quality will affect the plant performance in
terms of quality and quantity of treated water.
2 We have considered the temperature of the sewage as 25°C for Plant design.

1.2.2 Treated sewage parameters at STP outlet:

Parameter Value Units

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) <100 mg/lit
Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) <30 mg/lit
Total suspended solids <10 mg/lit
Oil & Grease <5 mg/lit

2 PROCESS DESCRIPTION

 Bar Screen
 Oil & grease Trap
 Sewage Collection tank cum Equalization tank
 MBBR System
 Tube Settler
 Hypo Dosing System
 Chlorine contact tank
 PSF/ ACF

Process Details:

A) Screening

Bar screen will remove foreign materials, such as plastic, rag, napkin and any other
solid/floating matter along with the incoming sewage.

B) Oil & Grease Trap

In this tank, Oil & Grease Trap will separate the free floating oil & grease from the
Sewage.

C) Equalization Tank/Collection sump

The sewage is collected in the Equalization tank by Gravity. From this tank the
sewage will be pumped to the Aeration Tank. The air blowers will be provided for
mixing & homogenization of the Sewage in the tank.

D) Aeration Tank

The equalized sewage will be transferred to the Aeration

Tank (MBBR). In MBBR (Moving Bed Bio-reactor) the
Sewage Water flows down keeping in contact with media
which is PP, designed for high Surface loading rate and
BOD removal for sewage plants. The air in form of fine
bubbles coming from the bottom of tank comes in contact
with Water & MBBR media. The tank is provided with fine
bubble diffusers for the biological oxidation of sewage.
Here, recirculation of
Sludge is done only in
the start-up phase to
bring the process under steady state. As soon as
steady state reaches no need for recirculation as

Page 5
SYMRPL
the layers of inactive sludge (which comes off naturally due to moving nature of
media) itself provide the desired MLSS to be maintained.

E) Tube Settler

The sewage comprising of the biological floc from MBBR will pass through a Tube
Settler where the solid mass will settle down at the bottom. The Tube Settler media
will facilitate the settling of suspended
particles. The clarified supernatant will be
collected in the filter feed tank by gravity
means. A part of underflow sludge will be
recycled back with the Sludge Recirculation
Pump to the MBBR to maintain the population of micro-organisms, required during
plant startup. The excess amount of Underflow sludge will be transferred to the
sludge drying beds.

F) Chlorine Contact Tank

Clear water from the Clarifier will be dosed with Sodium Hypo for disinfection &
stored in the Chlorine Contact Tank for tertiary treatment. Clear water from this
compartment is passed through a pressure sand filter and stored in final treated
water tank

G) Filters (PSF & ACF)

Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) consists essentially of a

pressure vessel. It is externally fitted with necessary
pipe work, valves, and pressure gauges. The bed
consists of sand, pebble gravel etc. Waste water
flows downwards
through the filter bed
and the suspended
solids are retained on
the media. It is required to
remove suspended
solids and turbidity from
clarified water.
Activated Carbon Filter (ACF) is used to knock off VOC
(Volatile Organic Compounds) normally associated in
almost all sewage treatment plant. ACF also helps in giving
polished look to treated water.
The filters will be backwashed after every 22 hours of
service or when the pressure drop across the filter exceeds 0.8 Kgs /cm2.
Waste Water generated from Filter backwash shall be recycled back to Equalization tank.
