1. PROCESS DESCRIPTION OF ETP

1.1 BASIS OF PLANT DESIGN

We have designed the Waste Water treatment plant based on the following
characteristics of the raw wastewater (assumed):
1. PH : 10-11
2. Color : Colored
3. BOD : 275 ppm
4. COD : 755 ppm
5. TSS : 660 ppm
6. DO : Nil

We have presumed that the characteristics of the raw wastewater will be remaining
constant through out the year and any variation on the same will be reflected on the
output of the plant.

1.2 TREATMENT SCHEME

Treatment scheme of proposed Effluent plant has been envisaged considering the
followings:
a) Quality of the raw wastewater, as stipulated above.
b) Quality of treated wastewater required.
c) End use of treated wastewater.

Hence, the treatment scheme of proposed Effluent treatment plant has been
selected considering mainly production of treated wastewater, suitable for
discharging into the main drain to river.

 Physicochemical treatment for the proposed of removal of color and BOD,

COD initially, to some extent.

1.3 UNIT OPERATION

Physiochemical Treatment Section:

 It is required to separate the coarse & medium fine solids at the inlet of the
plant for avoiding the clogging in the machineries (Pumps, mixtures etc.).
Bar screen will be provided for the separation of solids. Cleaning of this
screen will be done by manually.
 Raw wastewater will be collected in the underground Equalization tank for
holding raw wastewater equivalent to minimum (8) hours requirement of the
treatment plant. This is required for maintaining steady flow of wastewater
into the treatment plant as well as maintaining more or less uniform
characteristics of the raw wastewater for treatment in the Effluent treatment
plant. Since production of wastewater will be erratic, the minimum holding
time of Eight (8) hours requirement of the plant is essential for proper
operation of the Effluent treatment plant.

3
 Raw wastewater will be drawn by means of raw wastewater transfer pump
set for feeding the primary clarifier drain where dozing will be done.
 Ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) solution and Lime (CaO) solution will be dosed in
the raw wastewater for the purpose of removal of colors, BOD, and COD
content of the raw water some extent. Moreover, coagulation of suspended
impurities, present in the raw wastewater will also be effected thereby
enhancing the efficiency of sedimentation. Ferrous sulphate and Lime
solution will be dosed in the reaction chamber by means of Simplex type
metering pump set.
 Polyelectrolyte solution will be dosed in the raw wastewater for the purpose
of removal of color and will also act as coagulant aid for the purpose of
removal of suspended impurities expeditiously. Polyelectrolyte solution will
be dosed in the reaction chamber by means of Simplex type metering pump
set.
 Raw wastewater will be taken into the reaction chamber wherein ferrous
sulphate solution, Lime solution and Polyelectrolyte solution will be dosed.
Intimate mixing of chemicals with the raw wastewater will be facilitated in
this reaction chamber and for this purpose.
 The resultant wastewater along with chemical solution will gravitate to the
primary settling tank for the purpose of removal of suspended impurities and
chemical sludge thereby rendering the settled water more or less clear in
nature. Sludge will pass into the pit & from pit to sludge bed by pumping.
 Clear water from the primary clarifier is transferred to the aeration tank
where retention time is needed for 18 hrs. Here large quantities of air need to
supply by industrial tri loop roots blower.
 Then the effluent transfer to secondary clarifier for final separation purpose
holding time 3 hrs. Finally, treated water is going to the outlet through sump
1.5 hours capacity.
 Sludge from secondary tank is passing to the pit by gravity force & sent to
sludge bed by pump.
 From sludge bed, recycle water transfer to the collection tank.

1.4 CHEMICAL CONSUMPTION

Chemical consumption will depend upon the characteristics of the raw wastewater
and nature of dyes used in the process. However, it is expected that following
chemicals will be consume in treating 1 m3 of wastewater per hour:

a) Lime : 1 kg/hr
b) Ferrous Sulphate : 1 kg/hr
c) Polyelectrolyte : 10 gm/hr
d) HCl : 3.5 Kg/hr

1.5 POWER CONSUMPTION

The total power consumption of the plant will be maximum 5.5 KWh.

4
1.6 TREATED WATER QUALITY

Subject to the plant being run according to our instruction and there is no variation in
the design analysis of the raw wastewater, and subject to the use of proper quality of
chemicals during operation of the plant, the treaded waste water, to be obtainable
from the plant, will have the following guaranteed characteristics:

PH : 6-9
BOD : <30ppm
TSS : <30 ppm
COD : <100ppm
DO : 4.50-8.0ppm

2. Design Calculation for Effluent Plant:

Total washing machine = 04 set

Capacity per machine = 180 L/hr (1 Machine), 240 L/hr (3 Machines)

Water required = 180 + 240 x 3 = 900 L/hr =900 x 10 = 9000 L/day (Operation 10
hrs/day)

We have quoted for the Wastewater treatment plant that will be capable of treating
1000 L/hr of wastewater per day of 10 working hours.
But ETP capacity = 1000 L/hr so for 12 hrs operation 12000 L/day.

2.1 Design Calculation for Equalization Tank:

Influent flow, Q = 1 m3/hr = 12 m3/day

If the retention time is taken as 8 hour,
Then, volume of equalization tank is (1x8) =8 m3
Including safety factor, designed volume = 6 ft x 8 ft x 7 ft = 336 ft3 = 9.52 m3.
