MHF4U Unit 1 Lesson 6

1. Our goal is to extend the process of long division the division of polynomial expressions. Consider
(𝑥 4 − 𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 1) ÷ (𝑥 + 2) (𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 + 8) ÷ (𝑥 − 4)

2. Perform the following using long division of polynomials.

a) (𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 2) ÷ (𝑥 − 1) b) (𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 7) ÷ (𝑥 − 1)

c) (3𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 − 6) ÷ (𝑥 + 4) d) (5𝑥 5 + 2𝑥 4 + 3𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 2) ÷ (𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 5)
3. When dividing by a linear factor of the form (𝑥 − 𝑥𝑜 ), there is an alternate procedure for polynomial
division. Consider
(4𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 2) ÷ (𝑥 − 3)

4. Divide using synthetic division and write out the resulting quotient with remainder, if any.
a) (𝑥 3 + 2𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 7) ÷ (𝑥 − 1) b) (3𝑥 4 − 5𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 − 6) ÷ (𝑥 + 4)
