INTRODUCTION
In the early 20th Century, Mr. Das Gupta set up a Match Factory in Calcutta with small
semiautomatic Japanese machines, frames and gadgets imported from Japan. He made some
experiments with Colour Matches, and also produced some gerbs, fountains and large size
crackers. At that time, two enterprising young men, Mr. A Shanmuga Nadar and Mr. Ayya Nadar
(cousin brothers, both now deceased), set out to Calcutta on business, where they stumbled upon
the small Japanese match factory next to the lodge they stayed in. These two gentlemen toyed
with a few match sticks there, brought with them a few materials and attempted to make their
first matches in Sivakasi.
The idea of match making mooted them to make Colour Matches also, because the processes
were more or less similar. During this period, Colour Matches and Star Matches were imported
from Germany. Books on chemistry helped them to improve the quality of their products. Slowly
they got organized and stabilized the production.
Then onwards many people started safety matches production and today about 3500 Match
works are situated in and around Sivakasi. Nearly 30,000 persons are directly employed. The
market for safety matches grows at the rate of 10% per annum.

Production Process
VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS
The R&D department focuses on developing new match formulations, improving existing match
compositions, and exploring innovative manufacturing techniques. They conduct experiments,
analyze data, and collaborate with other departments to enhance product quality, safety, and
efficiency.
Production Department:
The quality control department is responsible for ensuring that the matchsticks meet quality
standards and adhere to safety regulations. They conduct regular inspections, perform tests on
match composition and ignition capability, and monitor the overall quality of the matchsticks
throughout the production process. This department plays a crucial role in maintaining consistent
quality and safety standards.
The supply chain department manages the sourcing of raw materials required for matchstick
production. They establish relationships with suppliers, negotiate contracts, monitor inventory
levels, and ensure a steady supply of wood splints, chemicals, binders, packaging materials, and
`7
other necessary components. This department also handles logistics, transportation, and
distribution of finished match products.
The engineering and maintenance department is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of
the manufacturing equipment and machinery. They ensure that all machinery is running
smoothly, conduct repairs, perform preventive maintenance, and optimize equipment
performance to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
The sales and marketing department focuses on promoting and selling the match products to
distributors, retailers, and consumers. They develop marketing strategies, create advertising
campaigns, manage customer relationships, and monitor market trends. This department also
conducts market research to identify new opportunities and expand the customer base.
Human Resources:
The finance and accounting department manages the financial aspects of the matchworks
company. They handle budgeting, cost analysis, financial reporting, payroll processing, and
financial forecasting. This department also ensures compliance with taxation and financial
regulations.
`8
PRODUCTION PROCESS
The production process of matchsticks involves several stages, from raw materials to the final
packaged product. Here is an overview of the typical production process in the match industry:
The primary raw materials for matchsticks are wooden splints, phosphorus-based chemicals
(phosphorus sesquisulfide or phosphorus pentasulfide), and a binder material (usually glue). The
wooden splints are typically made from softwood species like pine or aspen, which are cut into
thin strips.
`9
Match Head Preparation:
The match head composition is created by mixing the phosphorus-based chemicals with the
binder material and other additives. This mixture is often heated to form a paste or slurry.
The wooden splints are gathered and arranged into groups, forming a bundle. These bundles are
then carefully dipped into the match head composition, ensuring that the heads are evenly coated.
The excess composition is removed, and the match heads are left to dry.
`10
Application of Match Striker:
Match strikers, which contain abrasive materials such as red phosphorus or glass powder, are
prepared separately. The matchboxes or matchbooks are designed with a striking surface,
typically located on the side or back cover. The striker material is applied to this designated area.
Packaging:
Once the match heads are completely dry, they are bundled together and trimmed to uniform
length. The matchsticks are then packaged in various formats, such as matchboxes, matchbooks,
or match packets, for consumer convenience and safety. The packaging process involves placing
the matchsticks inside the designated containers and sealing them securely.

QUALITY CONTROL
Introduction:
The matchwork industry plays a vital role in providing a convenient and reliable
source of fire ignition for various applications. However, given the potential
hazards associated with matches, ensuring stringent quality control measures is of
utmost importance. Quality control practices within the matchwork industry are
crucial for guaranteeing product safety, reliability, and adherence to industry
standards. This essay explores the significance of quality control in the matchwork
industry and highlights the key processes and practices involved.
Quality control in the matchwork industry begins with the establishment of strict
product specifications. This involves defining the desired composition, dimensions,
and performance characteristics of matchsticks. Through extensive testing, various
parameters such as ignition capability, burn rate, and flame intensity are evaluated
to ensure compliance with safety regulations and customer expectations.
The quality control process encompasses thorough inspection and control of raw
materials used in match production. Wood splints, phosphorus-based chemicals,
`12
and binders must undergo rigorous testing to confirm their quality, consistency, and
compliance with safety standards. Effective supply chain management and regular
audits of suppliers are essential to maintain the integrity of raw materials.
`13
Quality control measures include verifying that packaging materials meet safety
regulations, proper labeling of warning signs and usage instructions, and
conducting regular inspections to ensure the integrity of the packaging.
