CHAPTER - V
5.1 STRENGTH

To take full advantage of a wood’s strength, pay attention to the grain direction.
Wood is a natural polymer — parallel strands ofcellulose fibersheld together by
aligninbinder. These long chains of fibers make the wood exceptionally strong —
they resist stress and spread the load over the length of the board. Furthermore,
cellulose is tougher than lignin. It’s easier to split a board with the grain (separating
thelignin)thanitistobreakitacrossthegrain(separatingthecellulosefibers).

Rememberthiswhenyoulayoutthepartsofaproject.Alwaysorientthegrainsothe fibers
support the load. Whenever possible, cut the parts so the grain is continuous,
running the length of the board. This also applies to wood joinery! When cutting
a tenon, for example, the wood grain must run the length of the tenon and the board
so the grain iscontinuous.

 Compressive strengthtells you how much of a load a wood species can

withstand parallel to the grain. How much weight will the legs of a table
support before theybuckle?
 Bending strength(also known as the modulus of rupture) shows the load the
wood can withstand perpendicular to the grain. How much weight can you
hang on apeg?
 Thestiffnessor modulus of elasticity indicates how much the wood will
deflect when a load is applied perpendicular to the grain. How far will those
shelvessag?
 Thehardnessreveals how resistant the surface of the wood is to scratches,
dents, and other abuse. How long will that kitchen counter stay looking new
andunmarred?

26
5.2 WEAKNESS
With its significant strength and low weight, wood has been a versatile
buildingmaterialforcenturies;however,wood-framing—likemanyotherstructural
materials—isnegativelyinfluencedbyamultitudeoffactors,andasaresult,wood-
framing in older structures often exhibits distress. Distress in wood structures can
oftenbetracedtounderestimationofenvironmentalloadssuchassnow,wind,orrain;
decayduetoexposuretomoisture,fungalattack,orinsectinfestation;thepresenceof
eccentric loads on connections that were not designed for eccentricity; structural
overload caused by inappropriate addition of dead loads; and overestimation of
allowablestresses.Alsoduetothewidevariabilityinthephysicalpropertiesofwood
andduetothelargenumberofrepetitivemembersinatypicalwood-framedstructure, the
laws of probability dictate that a few members may well experience distress over
thelifeofagivenstructure.Generally,however,althoughoneorseveralmembersin many
types of wood-framed structures may become damaged, collapse of part or all of the
structure remains unlikely due to the repetitive nature of the framing, its relatively
light weight, and/or the inherent redundancy of these structures. Consequently, these
structures often do not pose a significant life safety hazard even if they do not meet
current code requirements; however, a lack of understanding on the part of building
owners, building officials, or even engineers can result in overreaction regarding the
significance of distress that may occur. This paper sets forth a much needed
philosophy for evaluating older wood-framed structures inlight
ofthefactsthatoutrightcollapsesarerareandthatthesignificantredundancyinmost of
these structures generally provides considerable warning before structuraldamage
becomeslife-threatening.

5.3 OPPORTUNITIES
highlights the importance of achieving sustainable agriculture and food security, and
of halting deforestation. These ambitions are integral to 2 of the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) set out in Transforming our world: the 2030 Agendafor
Sustainable Development, namely SDG 2 and SDG 15. In addition, forests have key
roles to play in achieving other SDGs, such as those addressing poverty eradication,
protecting and restoring water-related ecosystems, access to sustainable energy, and

onto a sustainable and resilient path, and it features 17 Sustainable Development
