ABSTRACT

This study entitled “Money Management Techniques of Senior High School

Working Students”. We found out the different money management techniques that

working students used to manage their salary, and we asked considerable questions

that will guide us in understanding how working students used those money

management techniques to become manage their salary. The researchers distributed

the survey questionnaire to the 50 senior high school working students around

Valenzuela City. The study applied a correlational study as its research design to find

out the relationship between the demographic profile of working students and money

management techniques that they’re using. The survey questionnaire will be the main

data instrument for the study. The first part of the questionnaire talks about the

demographic profile of the respondents. The second part of the questionnaire talks

about how using the different money management techniques assist working students

to manage their salary. The statistical tools we used were percentage frequency

distribution and T- test. In computing, analyzing, summarizing, and interpreting data,

the study composed 50 respondents from General Tiburcio De Leon National High

School, Our Lady of Lourdes College, St. Bernadette College of Valenzuela and

Electron College of Technical Education. The researchers' findings show that in

some schools, there is no significant relationship between the demographic profiles

of the working students and the money management techniques they’re using, so the

null hypothesis is accepted.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter gives emphasis on Introduction, Background of the Study,

Statement of the Problem, Hypothesis, Scope and Delimitation and Significance of

the Study.

Introduction

As students, we have a lot of expenses, including school projects, allowances,

food, etc. Some of us don't know how to manage money properly, which leads to

overspending. It's really hard to manage, especially if we don't have enough money.

so that we need to think critically about how to spend our money wisely. We also

need to know how to separate our needs from our wants and prioritize important

things before spending our remaining money on other things. Nowadays, goods and

essentials are expensive, so we need to be frugal at all costs. Know how much you

spend in a day and keep the remaining as savings or in case you need to buy

important things immediately.

There are a lot of ways to manage our money, and adapting one of them will

help us budget. If we know proper money management, it will be easy for us to make

decisions on how to spend and track where our money goes. No more overspending,

shortages, or being in debt because of good money management. We can also

GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 2
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

prepare for future financial decisions, including investing and saving. Once we have

knowledge about the right money management, it will lead us to be better people in

the future. To make decisions that will improve your financial situation, you can use

money management to have a better understanding of your income and spending.

A life skill that assists in the development of one's own salary is managing. You

can manage your money wisely if you start using money management techniques

early on. All students who are employed know how to utilize and manage their

salaries appropriately using various money management techniques. However,

working students employ these techniques in their salary management differently;

some people are more skilled and prudent in their money management than others.

This study aims to determine whether a person's demographic profile has an

effect on the money management techniques utilized by working students to manage

their salary. This study explores various money management techniques that could

teach students how to effectively manage their salary.

GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 3
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Background of the Study

Making smart financial decisions and managing cash well is not only a good

habit to learn but it also contributes to future financial success. Since students are

considered as the backbone of any country, to equip themselves both physically and

mentally is essential for the strong foundation of a great nation tomorrow. Practicing

good money management skills among students is good for their bright future and

thereby for the society and nation itself. ( Manju, 2016 )

One of the beneficial habits we should adopt for ourselves is knowing about and

adopting various money management techniques to help us make wise financial

decisions and manage our money before we spend too much. This helps us remain

financially stable in the future. Every young person should be taught different money

management techniques and how to use them to manage their money appropriately.

Managing one's money is a big help for one's future, especially since they can also

help their city and country. Young people, students, and especially working students

are considered to be the backbone of any country.

Allowance is money earned or given to a child at regular intervals to teach the

child how to manage money. As they go towards higher level of education,

particularly in senior high school, every student encounters one of the challenging

part of their life is to manage their allowances wisely. As money serves now as a

necessity to every student, it is a need to put in their minds that they need to be

financially responsible. A kind of responsibility where an individual will be able to

GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 4
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

save and budget his or her money and spend the money for important purposes. But

the big dilemma is that how will they do it. It is believed that one of the hardest part

of budgeting the allowance of a senior high student is the isolation of their wants

from their needs. ( Bonggaoen et al., 2019 )

The allowance is the money earned by working students and is one of the

instruments to teach them how to properly handle and manage the money they have.

It is the money that each student has that they commit to using for their school's costs.

It gets harder for working students to handle their money or salary intelligently as

they get older and their education progresses; it is now their obligation to use and

manage their money appropriately for their expenses, such as their necessities and

wants.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study was to identify the money management techniques

used by the working students in order to manage their salary. The study seek to

answer the following question:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1. Age

1.2. Gender

1.3. School

1.4. Strand

1.5. Occupation

1.6. Salary

2. What are the money management techniques of the working students?

1.1. 50/30/20 Rule,

1.2. 50/50 Rule,

1.3. Envelope System Rule, and

1.4. Listing Budget Rule

3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and the

money management techniques?

GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 6
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Hypothesis: (This hypothesis has a 0.05 significant level of accuracy..)

There is no significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and

the money management techniques?

Scope and Delimitation:

This study entitled “Money Management Techniques of Senior High School

Working Students” focuses on the money management techniques of working

students and its relationship to the demographic profile of the respondents. The

research study covers 50 working students around the Barangay of General Tiburcio

de Leon, Valenzuela City for the 1st semester of the academic year 2022-2023. The

respondents of this study were selected through purposive sampling.

Significance of the Study

The study's findings would be extremely beneficial to the following:

Students - This research will be beneficial to students especially to the working

students to gain ideas or information about the different types of money management

techniques to help them manage their salary.

Researchers - This research will be useful to future researchers who would conduct

research especially if their research is connected or similar to this type of study, they

can gain ideas or information from the researchers' findings.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter gives emphasis on Related Literature, Conceptual Framework,

Theoretical Framework, Synthesis of Related Literature and Definition of Terms.

Related Literature

According to Chen (2022), Money management refers to the processes of

budgeting, saving, investing, spending, or otherwise overseeing the capital usage of

an individual or group. Money management broadly refers to the processes utilized

to record and administer an individual's, household's, or organization's finances.

Budgeting, saving, and spending are parts of money management. This process

can help working students in handling their monthly income wisely. Their is one

consistent rule in money management that working students must remember, it is

expenses should never exceed income.

It is a natural human tendency to spend money to fulfil the cravings regardless of

whether they can be justifiably included in a budget. The idea of money management

techniques was developed to reduce the amount that individuals, firms, and

institutions spend on items that do not add any significant value to their standard of

living, long-term portfolios, and assets. (Clear Tax, 2023)

GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 8
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

It says that working students spend money just for their satisfaction without

thinking that it’s not included in the budget. Just like what they always do, if they see

something and they do like it is very easy for them to decide to buy. So to minimize

that they now have a knowledge about money management, to control expenses and

list down their wish list. In this way, they can minimize their spending habit.

According to Hands on Banking (2023) a non-commercial financial education

program. Money management is one of the most important parts of your financial

life. Knowing how to how to budget, spend and save can help you reach your

financial goals, get out of debt, and build your savings. In this resource, you will

learn how to manage your money and find tips to help you get to where you want to

be financially.

In order to achieve financial goals, working students must have the ability on

how to manage their money. Having this ability will help them to control their

spending and build their savings. Working students will be knowledgeable enough in

handling their income when it arrives.

According to Wayland (2023), Early instruction in the principles of financial

management is crucial. Although it's wise to learn financial skills from a young age,

the best time to teach children about money management is before they enter high

school. Teaching children about finance and money management will help them to

save and spend sensibly in later life. This is the age when many children start to

handle their own money, and it's also typically when kids start working part-time.
GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 9
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

It is better to teach children how to spend money wisely when they are young so

that they will know how to save when they get older. Most young people today spend

more money without considering how important it is if they have stuff to buy

especially when they are studying or in an emergency, they won't have any issues.

In the recent years, there has been a high interest in researches showing who

between women and men manage personal finances better (Kroska, A. 2008). There

are stereotypes (Bartkus, K.R., Peterson M.F. and Bellenger, D.N. 1989) based on

the unavoidable fact that women spend more in family, while men care about long

term investments. According to personal finance experts, women tend to be more

oriented to put details on their money. On the other hand, men tend to be reserved

about spending money in small things but they are obsessed with bigger finance

views such as a car, a house, a land or stocks. (Doda, 2014)

Women are more expensive than men, especially when it comes to cosmetics,

travel or buying personal items than men. Women know more about money

management than men, even if they have a lot to buy, they can fit the money they

have for everything they need to buy. Men also sometimes spend, but they spend on

things they don't really need, as long as they want or have wanted for a long time.

They both know how to manage money but the women are better. There are times

when men are better at managing, but usually women take the lead. Men don't just

spend because they have certain things they want to save up for or they really set
GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 10
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

aside money while for women, they buy what they want or need as long as it fits the

money they have.

Money management is the process of organizing and investing your own or

other else’s money (Galulu, 2017). Money management includes in the areas of

investment; budgeting, banking and taxes. Hence, it is a good strategy for a student

on how to manage and spend the allowance wisely. Cited by Widener, students who

possess basic knowledge skill of money management have the adequate of financial

knowledge (Ibrahim et al., 2009). According to a research of Westwood College in

U.S., allowance is amount of something available or need that uses for certain

purpose. The words that usually associated with the students and school expenses.

Students may encounter difficulties in terms of budget their allowance, especially

when they have to take responsibility into account expenses that they have never

been paid before (Butler, 2017). Senior High School students are facing difficulties

in terms of budget their given weekly allowance because of the expenses that they

need to pay. (Timpug et al., 2017)

Money management can help especially students or people who are not familiar

with how to manage money properly. To the person always bought without thinking

carefully if they have anything left or where their money goes. This will help you

know where your money is going and how to handle it properly. Money or allowance

is easy to use up or lose especially if you don't know how to manage it properly so

we should know what is the right money management. Through this, we can become
GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 11
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

financially stable, or save so that in case there is something more important that

needs to be done right away, it can be easily obtained because you have money set

aside from your proper use of money.

According to Brighter Life Team (2022), When it comes to being financially

prepared, students can actually already lay out the path to a bright future. Future

planning is important, especially for students. It doesn't begin merely after

graduation. To be able to navigate the future with ease, one must obtain a head start

as soon as feasible. One would not be taken off guard if they were able to plan for the

unexpected because life's surprises occur in many different forms.

Planning and managing money are extremely important for every working

student's bright and decent future. While it is best for students to begin and learn

financial preparedness early on by utilizing various money management techniques,

which can be used by anyone to manage their salaries, it is better for working

students to become aware of and learn how to manage their salaries properly sooner

so that in the future they will know and manage their salary properly.

According to a Publishing Website Business World (2021), The impact of the

coronavirus pandemic on incomes and livelihood has caused millennial and

Generation Z (Gen Z) Filipinos to be more aware of their financial health and save

up for future needs, a separate survey conducted by Manufacturers Life Insurance Co.

(Phils), Inc. (Manulife Philippines). Manulife Philippines Chief Marketing Officer

Melissa Henson said in a press briefing that their latest survey showed young
GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 12
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Filipinos became more conscious of their financial standing when the pandemic hit,

causing them to put savings among their top priorities in life. Gen Z Filipinos started

saving at the age of 17 and began investing as early as 21, she said, while millennials

started saving at the age of 23 while their investments began at age 27. The survey

also found 92% of Gen Z respondents are considering to buy insurance over the next

one to two years.

Many young Filipinos have become conscious of their money or salary that they

receive so they learn on how to manage their money properly using various money

management techniques. When the pandemic hit the country, this was one of the

reasons why the young generation today, especially the working students, were made

aware of their finances and salary to learn to manage properly and save money for

future needs.

Weston and Brigham (1981) stated financial management behavior as an area of

financial decision-making, harmonizing individual motives and enterprise goals.

According to Joe (2008) consequently, financial management is mainly concerned

with the effective fund’s management. In line with this, effective financial

management behavior should improve financial well-being positively and failure to

manage personal finances can lead to serious long term, negative social and societal

consequences. Researchers indicated that well informed, financially educated

consumers are better able to make good decisions for their families and thus are in a

position to increase their economic security and well-being. (Boral et al., 2020)
GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 13
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

The correct and effective use of a person in money management techniques is

certain and undoubtedly helps and changes a person's financial well-being because

the salary will be more organized and will spent it correctly. Money management

technique is a big thing that can help in managing the money or salary of a working

student. According to a study, a person's decision-making and financial planning for

their family will get better and better if they understand and can employ money

management approaches.

According to Lalosa, A. (2020), Nowadays, women are less prepared to make

important decisions like saving for retirement, purchasing a home, or thriving after a

failed marriage because they frequently have interrupted employment histories, earn

less than men during their working years, have longer life expectancies, and have

lower confidence in their financial knowledge than men. It's challenging to manage

one's own finances or be an equal partner in a relationship without access to

fundamental facts.

There are jobs today that women can earn to supplement their expenses,

especially if they have children, families to support, or for their education. But this is

only enough for everyday, or necessities, so they cannot save or set aside for the

future, buying a house or for emergency purposes. Women are thrifty and know how

to manage what they need and spend, men are not very expensive especially with

their bodies care so they can save or save for what they want, although they spend for

what they need but not like women who spend a lot.
GEN. T. DE LEON NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Page | 14
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Theoretical Framework

According to the theory of Galperti (2019), it states that consumers often use

personal budgets to manage self-control problems. Many studies argue that personal

budgeting is a pervasive part of consumer behavior. This practice involves grouping

expenses into categories and constraining each with an implicit or explicit cap

applied to a specified time period (a week, a month, etc.). this practice cannot be

explained by the classic life-cycle theory of the consumer, it has important

consequences. It can account for “mysterious” large differences in wealth

accumulation between consumers that time or risk preferences cannot explain.

We have several options for managing our finances or creating budgets. As

students, we should be able to budget properly rather than only making random

purchases,We must have a thorough understanding of how to manage money and its

significance,Because not everyone has the aptitude to acquire it,being financial

literate is extremely difficult. For people with a lot of expenses, budgeting can be

difficult,so it's critical that they understand good spending practices to prevent

stress, financial hardship, and debt. It's crucial to be aware of how you spend, save,

and budget your money.Their financial objectives will be met with the aid of sound

money management.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter gives emphasis on Research Design, Respondents of the Study,

Research Instruments, Data Gathering Procedure and Statistical Analysis.

Research Design

The researchers used descriptive research design specifically the correlational

approach to find out the relationship between the money management techniques and

the demographic profile of senior high school working students of General Tiburcio

De Leon National High School, Our Lady of Lourdes College, St. Bernadette

College of Valenzuela and Electron College of Technical Education.

According to Bhandari (2022), with a correlational research design, correlations

between variables are examined without any of the variables being under the

researcher's direct control or manipulation. A correlation shows how strongly and/or

in what direction two (or more) variables are related. A correlation's direction may be

positive or negative.
