1. At high temperatures and low pressures, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide undergo
the following reversible reactions:

An initial gas mixture contains 45 mol % H2S, 25 mol % SO2, and the balance inert N2 at a
pressure of 1.2 atm.
a. Calculate the equilibrium mole fractions of all reaction components when the
preceding reactions are at equilibrium at a constant pressure of 1.2 atm.
b. Repeat (a) for equilibrium at constant volume when the initial pressure is 1.2 atm
2. Carbon dioxide is being compressed isothermally at 50 °C to 1/100th of its initial volume.
The initial pressure is 1.0 atm.
a. Calculate the work per g-mol of gas required using the ideal gas assumption and
employing the Redlich-Kwong equation of state.
b. Check whether the variation of the pressure P and volume V during compression
follows the expected path of PV = constant for the ideal and nonideal cases of part
(a).
c. Repeat (a) and (b) for the cases when the gas to be compressed is (1) air and (2)
methane. Explain the differences in the behavior of the three gases.
