Moral development is the process by which people develop the distinction between right and wrong

(morality) and engage in reasoning between the two (moral reasoning). Lawrence Kohlberg, an American
psychologist, formulated one of the most renowned theories that delve into fundamental inquiries of
human development. His theory builds upon the groundwork laid by Jean Piaget but with a particular
focus on unraveling the process through which children cultivate their moral reasoning abilities.

Kohlberg's theory of moral development centers around the progression of children's moral
understanding and reasoning. This theory proposes that moral development unfolds through a sequence
of six distinct stages, wherein the emphasis lies on the pursuit and preservation of justice as the
fundamental basis of moral thinking.
