Introduction

This document provides technical information for the QCU602 Single Party
Service Quad Channel Unit (see Fig. 1.1).

Description 363-252-739, Issue 3

Description
The QCU602 is installed in the DISC★S Fiber-In-The-Loop (FITL) Optical
Network Unit (ONU) providing four channels of two-wire single-party
Message Telephone Service (MTS) and loop-start supervision. It is a current
source circuit and interfaces between the subscriber and the FITL system.
The QCU602 is compatible with rotary and Dual Tone Multifrequency
(DTMF) dialing and is equipped with forward disconnect capabilities.

The model number, revision level, and date of manufacture are coded in the
unit’s nonvolatile memory (NVRAM) to allow an operator to access card
inventory information from either the Supervisory System (SS) or
Narrowband Element Management System (EMS).

Features and Functions

Applications
Single Party Service

In the Universal application, the QCU602 works as a complement to two

Central Office Terminal (COT) Dual Channel Unit (DCU10) channel units to
provide four channels of single-party MTS.

The QCU602 also works in TR-08 and TR-303 integrated applications.

The QCU602 at the ONU is automatically provisioned for single party service
(SPS) application.

The QCU602 can only be installed in a 12/24-channel FITL ONU. If an OIU4X

at the ONU is used with a 24-channel ONU provisioned for 12 channels, then
the QCU602 provides four channels of service per card slot from the first three
card slots for a total of 12 DS-0s. If an OIU4X at the ONU is used with a
QCU602 in a 24-channel ONU that is provisioned for 24 channels, then the
QCU602 provides four channels of service per card slot from all six cards slots
for a total of 24 DS-0s.

Faceplate Features
The BUSY LED on the QCU602 channel unit faceplate illuminates when any
one of the four channels is busy.

Alarms and Indicators

If the QCU602 is installed in an ONU channel slot, and if the channel slot has
been manually provisioned for a different type of channel unit, then, upon
insertion of the QCU602, an indicator in the RDT sounds and a Channel Unit
Light-Emitting Diode (CU LED) on the Alarm Unit illuminates, indicating a
channel unit mismatch. The Alarm Unit is located in the RDT.

Installation and Testing

ALERT! The QCU602 uses certain semiconductor devices that can be

damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). Do not remove the QCU602 from
its protective packing container until time of installation. To equalize the
static charge on the channel and ONU shelf, establish a body path to ground
using an ESD wrist strap connected to the ground bar. If storing or shipping
the QCU602 becomes necessary, place it in a conductive shipping container
or wrap it in aluminum foil to prevent static buildup.

Verification
F1:F2 Cross-Connects

If provisioned, the F1:F2 cross-connects are verified using the SS or EMS. By

installing and verifying the F1:F2 cross-connects, it is possible to make cable
pair assignments at the RDT. Use the following procedure to verify the
cross-connects and display or print the Channel Shelf Status Report.

1. Logon to the SS or EMS. The Main Menu is displayed.

2. Select 3 Channel Provisioning and then <ENTER>. The Channel
Provisioning Menu is displayed.
3. Select 5 Time Slot Assignment and then <ENTER>. The Time Slot
Menu is displayed.
4. Select 4 Enter F1-F2 Cross Connect and then <ENTER>. The sys-
tem displays:

Installation

The QCU602 can be installed in any channel slot of an ONU shelf. Insert the
unit in the slot, ensuring that the connector mates properly with the connector
in the shelf. Use the following procedure to install the QCU602.

1. Verify correct card received for installation.

Contact the next level of support if an incorrect or damaged card was
been received.
2. Ensure that an approved ESD wrist strap is properly connected to the
ground bar.
If the installation is a replacement of a failed QCU602, continue with
Step 3. For a first time installation, go to Step 5.
3. Remove the QCU602 from the channel shelf.

ALERT! When removing a channel unit, be sure that it does not touch
components on an adjacent circuit card. Contact with other cards could
disable the entire system.

4. Pack the channel unit in an appropriate ESD-safe container.

5. Remove the new QCU602 from the shipping container.
6. Inspect the contacts on new channel unit.
Note: The contacts are located on connector and back edge of card.
They should be clean, straight, and free from damage.

7. Place the latch on QCU602 circuit card in the open position and insert
channel unit into slot.
8. While holding the faceplate, position the card in the card guides and slide
the card into the slot until firmly seated.
9. Position the latch on QCU602 circuit card in the closed position.

ALERT! Verify that the card is firmly in place before closing latch.

10. Update office records. Installation of the QCU602 is complete.

Provisioning
Use the following procedure to provision QCU602 channels for full-time
on-hook transmission.

Note 1: Provisioning for on-hook transmission can be accomplished

either through the Narrowband Element Management System (EMS)
or the Supervisory System (SS).

Note 2: Each channel on the QCU602 may be provisioned for

full-time on-hook transmission.

1. Logon to the system through either the EMS or SS. The Main Menu is dis-
played.
2. Select 3 Channel Provisioning and then <ENTER>. The Channel
Provisioning Menu is displayed.

Diagnostic Tests 363-252-739, Issue 3

Diagnostic Tests
General

The QCU602 is compatible with the Pair Gain Test Controller (PGTC) and
test systems that use Mechanized Loop Testing (MLT) procedures.

Turnup Diagnostic Tests

Turnup diagnostic tests consist of channel unit diagnostic procedures

performed after installation through the SS or EMS after installation. This
turnup procedure verifies channel function without the need for standard
ring, dial, and talk procedures. These channel unit diagnostics can be
performed in less time than traditional turnup procedures. Use the following
procedure to conduct the turnup diagnostic test.

ALERT! Turnup tests can be service-affecting. Be sure that the channel you
select are not connected and/or the subscribers have been notified prior to
proceeding.

1. Logon to SS or EMS. The Main Menu displays.

2. Select 5 Maintenance Menu and <ENTER>. The Maintenance Menu
displays.
3. Select 4 Channel Unit Diagnostics and <ENTER>. The Channel
Unit Diagnostics Menu displays.
