THE DEATH PENALTY SHOULD BE REINTRODUCED IN SOUTH AFRICA.

Affirmative:

Introduction:
1. Good morning/afternoon/evening Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen.
2. My name is Isaura Guambe and The topic for our debate is that Death penalty should
be reintroduced in South Africa.

Definition:
Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty and formerly called judicial
homicide, is the state-sanctioned practice of killing a person as a punishment for
a crime, usually following an authorized, rule-governed process to conclude that the
person is responsible for violating norms that warrant said punishment.

In other words it is the punishment of being killed that is used in some countries for
very serious crimes.

We, the affirmative team, believe that this statement is true.

Team split:
1. Today as first speaker, I will be talking to you about the justice and deterrence that
the death penalty provides for all of us

2. Our second speaker will be talking about (Insert the headings of the points your
second speaker will be
talking about.)

3. Our third speaker will rebut the negative team and sum up our team case.

Arguments:
Now I am going to discuss my 2 points.

2. My first point is about how the death penalty provides justice for us. The society has
a moral obligation to protect the safety and welfare of its citizens, and since there are
people threaten this safety and welfare, Only by putting them to death can society
ensure that they will not commits the same crime, again.
Why should a murderer be allowed to live out the rest of their lives in relative comfort,
paid for by the public? They gave up their right to life when they took the life of another
person, and justice can only be served by their lawful execution.
There is some evidence to suggest that the death penalty may be an effective deterrent
to crime. A number of studies have found that there is a correlation between the use of
the death penalty and a decrease in certain violent crimes. For example, a study
conducted by economist Joanna Shepherd found that each execution deters an average
of 18 murders. Another study by Kent Scheidegger, a legal scholar, found that every
execution results in 3 to 18 fewer murders.

3. And my second point is about deterrence. Deterrence is probably the most

commonly expressed rationale for the death penalty. The essence of the theory is that
the threat of being executed in the future will be sufficient to cause a significant number
of people to refrain from committing a heinous crime they had otherwise planned.
Evidence suggests that the death penalty not only makes people afraid of committing
crimes, it also has the ability to deter some criminals who have already committed a
capital crime from committing other crimes while in prison.

Ending:
So Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen , in conclusion death penalty protect
the society from the most dangerous criminals, provides a sense of justice for the
families and loved ones of victims and serves as a deterrent to potential criminals who
may be deterred from committing serious crimes because of the potential punishment.

I'm Isaura and I yes, believe that Death penalty should be reintroduced in South Africa.

thank you.
Negative:

Introduction:
1. Good morning/afternoon/evening Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen

2.My name is Isaura and The topic for our debate is ‘that the death penalty should be
reintroduced in SA.

Definition:
1. We agree with the definition given by the affirmative team.
OR
We disagree with the definition given by the opposition. (If you disagree explain why
the opposition’s
definition is wrong.)

My definition:
Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty and formerly called judicial
homicide, is the state-sanctioned practice of killing a person as a punishment for
a crime, usually following an authorized, rule-governed process to conclude that the
person is responsible for violating norms that warrant said punishment.

In other words it is the punishment of being killed that is used in some countries for
very serious crimes.

2. However we, the negative team, believe that this statement is false.

Team split:
1. Today as first speaker I will be talking to you about the risks the death penalty to
innocent people and how that it does detain crime.

2. Our second speaker will be talking about (Insert the headings of the points your
second speaker will be
talking about.)

3. Our third speaker will rebut the affirmative case and sum up our team case.

Arguments:
1. I am going to discuss 2 points.

My first point is the risks of executing innocent people. The death penalty system is not
perfect, and mistakes can happen. In cases where an innocent person is sentenced to
death, there is a risk that they may be executed before their innocence can be proven.
This is a significant risk because the death penalty is irreversible. Once someone is
executed, there is no way to undo the mistake, and the innocent person's life is lost
forever. FOR EXAMPLE Research on DNA evidence has shown that innocent people
have been wrongly convicted and sentenced to death, risking their lives due to flaws in
the justice system. This highlights the danger of using the death penalty as a
punishment, as it can lead to the irreversible loss of innocent lives.

3. And my second point is that Death penalty does not detain crime. The death penalty
has not been proven to be a deterrent to crime in any significant way. There is no
conclusive evidence to suggest that it is more effective at preventing crime than other
forms of punishment, such as life imprisonment. Research studies conducted in different
parts of the world have consistently failed to establish a correlation between the use of
the death penalty and a reduction in crime rates. Additionally, many criminologists and
legal experts argue that deterrence is not the primary reason for imposing the death
penalty, and that its use is more often driven by political considerations and the desire
for revenge.

Ending:
So Mr/Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, in conclusion research studies have
consistently shown that there is no correlation between the death penalty and a
reduction in crime rates. Criminologists and legal experts argue that the use of the death
penalty is driven more by political considerations and the desire for revenge than by
deterrence. Furthermore, the risk of innocent people being wrongfully convicted and
sentenced to death highlights the flaws in the system and the need to re-evaluate its use.
Therefore, it can be concluded that the death penalty does not deter crime and is a risk
to innocent people.

I'm Isaura and , i believe that The death penalty should not be reintroduced in South
Africa
